Near Death Experiences

Not sure if this is the right subforum. How do we feel about these? After a preliminary search, I was surprised to find so little on this topic. On a personal note, it was in part due my research on NDEs (almost a hobby for me) that brought me to a much deeper relationship with Jesus Christ- what we call being "born again". So can't be all bad?

There are a lot of books out there on NDEs, even some movies. I believe they occur, for the most part. Some of the claims do induce a bit of skepticism, but our Lord knows the truth about those, and His opinion is all that truly matters.

I study NDEs because they are allegedly direct experiences with the Other Side, including sometimes with Jesus Christ and God the Father. I want so much to learn about the Lord and his ways. It excites me beyond imagination. I want at least some of them to be valid.

I would say that a large percentage of the reports are true. As you read their stories, some ring very true, some ring false.

There is currently a movie in the theaters about a NDE featuring a little boy, "Heave Is For Real". The now older NDEr is named Colton Burpo. A well presented movie.

I haven't seen the movie either, but friends who did see it were really pleased with the way the subject matter was presented.

These testimonies are from a book i read in 1972 called "Voices From The Edge Of Eternity" they are testimonies from both the saved and unsaved.. Caution if your not saved some of these testimonies may make the hair on your head stand straight up.. if on the other hand you know Jesus these will serve as both a reminder of why we are still here and a blessing..

Colton was 3 when this supposedly happened. He's now 14 and his story is still evolving. It's growing.

He didn't die but his spirit went to heaven.

I just don't believe it.

It's a scam.
.

Do you believe they ever happen?

I don't believe the Lord would allow short visits to heaven or hell. It's not scriptural.

Just my opinion.
.

Does something have to be in the Bible to be true? Scripture doesn't mention the 2012 World Series, either, but I'm reasonably sure it took place.

Of course not. But when scripture says one thing and the individual says the opposite, I'll go with scripture every time.

Gotcha, fair enough. But, is the specific phenomenon generally known as Near Death Experience contrarian to something(s) in scripture?

I'll make another comment at this point, just to get it down, no relation to where the thread is currently: I find the term "Near Death Experience" (NDE) to be a complete misnomer. What people describe, who have had this experience, is not so much "near death"; since they do die (I'm stating this as a reference point to a meaningful dialogue), but post death. I think science was too spiritually-biased at the time when NDEs were just starting to enter public consciousness. Science did not yet want to admit to the possibility of returning from death, which by its own definition was a permanent and unalterable state. So they used a loaded terminology which basically denied the concept of resurrection, at least to us mere mortals. I wish people would adopt a more accurate verbiage, such as "Post Death Experience".

I am not an advocate of NDE.You have to be very careful that Satan is not coming off as that light.

Far too often, in centuries' past, if a person experienced a NDE, he would be considered evil, possessed, not quite human, when he 'returned' and spoke about it. In more modern times, because of not wanting to be considered odd, a liar, possesses, not quite human, many people opt to not talk about their experience in a near-death situation. People have been reported as flat-liners, only to be resuscitated after a time. Since not everyone has a positive, heavenly experience, NDEs are rather interesting.

I took this testimony from that link because when reading it you can see the every lasting mercy of our Lord and saviour..

Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.

12 Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you.

13 And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.

079 - AN INFIDEL'S LIFE SPARED A FEW DAYS

"During the summer of 1862, I became acquainted with a Mr. A____, who professed infidelity, and who was, I think, as near an atheist as any I ever met. I held several conversations with him on the subject of religion, but could not seem to make any impression on his mind, and when a point was pressed strongly he would become angry.

"In the fall he was taken ill and seemed to go into a rapid decline. I, with others, sought kindly and prayerfully to turn his mind to his need of a Savior, but only met with rebuffs. As I saw that his end was drawing near, one day I pressed the importance of preparing to meet God, when he became angry and said I need not trouble myself any more about his soul, as there was no God, the Bible was a fable, and when we die that is the last of us, and was unwilling that I should pray with him. I left him, feeling very sad.

"Some four weeks after, on New Year's morning, I awoke with the impression that I should go and see Mr. A____, and I could not get rid of that impression; so, about nine o'clock, I went to see him, and as I approached the house I saw the two doctors, who had been holding a consultation, leaving. When I rang the bell, his sister-in-law opened the door for me, and exclaimed, 'Oh! I am so glad you have come; John is dying. The doctors say he cannot possibly live above two hours, and probably not one.' When I went up to his room, he sat bolstered up in a chair, and appeared to have fallen into a doze. I sat down about five feet from him, and when in about two minutes he opened his eyes and saw me, he started up, with agony pictured on his face and in the tones of his voice, and exclaimed, 'O! Mr. P____, I am not prepared to die; there is a God; the Bible is true! O, pray for me! pray God to spare me a few days till I shall know I am saved!'

"These words were uttered with the intensest emotion, while his whole physical frame quivered through the intense agony of his soul. I replied in effect that Jesus was a great Savior, able and willing to save all who would come unto Him, even at the eleventh hour, as He did the thief on the cross.

"When I was about to pray with him, he again entreated me to pray especially that God would spare him a few days, till he might have the evidences of his salvation. In prayer I seemed to have great assurance of his salvation and asked God to give us the evidence of his salvation by granting him a few more days in this world. Several others joined in praying God to spare him a few days, till he should give evidence of being saved.

"I called again in the evening; he seemed even stronger than in the morning, and his mind was seeking the truth. The next day as I entered, his face expressed the fact that peace and joy had taken the place of fear and anxiety. He was spared some five days, giving very clear evidence that he had passed from death to life. His ease was a great mystery to the doctors. They could not understand how he lived so long; but his friends, who had been praying for him, all believed it was in direct answer to prayer." - Wonders of Prayer.

that and it brought tears to my eyes
