Need Help (Old or Dead Computers)

If you live in SE Texas I have a request. I do my best to supply people, such as High School students and the Elderly with computers for surfing the web and to do their homework. Being on VA Benefits, myself, I have no funding, just ability and desire. If your ´puter has been eaten up by a worm, trojan or virus and you have replaced it I can, usually, make it all good again by installing Ubuntu on it and then I find a person that needs and pass it to them, free, of course. If you live close enough to pass it off to me in Magnolia, just north of Houston, it can be put to very good use. Contact me through the IM or email me through this site.

Thank you and may God bless you.

Very noble. If I lived close to you I would drop a few off as I have many leftover towers and parts from old computers. You and I are also the same philosophy regarding OS's. Loading Ubuntu is very smart. Once you have that baby working, I'll bet dollars to donuts you'll rarely if ever get a call to come and fix the thing. Give out a Microsoft computer, I guarantee it will be back within a week screwed up royally with a virus even with so-called virus protection--- you would never have an end to the headaches constantly fixing all the computers you gave out. :lol But I remember your past post about giving up Microsoft and that was a smart move.

Youŕe right Tim, since I have began ignoring the MS systems and just installing over them I have had exactly zero return and they, every one, go out with a Sticky note, inside and out, with my number for free tech service.

You ought to start the same ministry in your church.

Good point. Perhaps I should.

I've been to 2 places in Texas: Houston and Magnolia (the previous company I worked for is based there, with the parent company based in Houston). I wish I lived closer to you as I have a 10 year old Dell that is sitting around. It really isn't much good for anything other than surfing the web although I did upgrade the PCU, RAM and video card a few years ago. Oddly enough, I was just mentioning to my wife last night that I would like to try Ubuntu on it (I've never even seen it and have only heard of it through users on this site), and I hadn't seen this thread.

I pray that you get computers coming in. That's a good, worthwhile ministry. :thumbsup

There is a derivative of ubuntu known as Puppy that is made for your older machine. There is Lucid Puppy 5.0 and for the older machines there is Wary Puppy, I believe, 5.25. Wary is likely your best bet and I have tested both on 32 meg of RAM with remarkable results. My personal Lap-Top belonged to my son-in-law, who is in heaven right now. It is a ´98 model Gateway an it runs like a zebra with a lion about 6 inches off it´s left flank.

Yeah Puppy may be a good choice. Do you know the specs on that machine?

On older machines I usually run Ubuntu without a GUI and then install one of the less heavy GUIs that are out there.

Wish I lived in Texas as I have a computer I'd toss your way.
