Net neutrality

i didn't see a discussion on this anywhere else so..... I figured I would start one (finally a non religous discussion!)

a background :
1. What is net neutrality?
Net neutrality is the principle that all users and sites across the internet should be given equal access to the global network. This neutrality has served as a roof over the head of the internet. It has allowed new ideas like Google, Netflix, Amazon, Facebook, YouTube, MySpace and a host of others to overtake outdated or inferior ideas. More importantly, net neutrality also helps to ensure the preservation of free speech. The idea that a person may start up a blog and begin to have an effect on the political process is amazing. This is possible only because that blogger has just as much access to his or her community as CNN or Fox News.

2. What will happen if net neutrality is not protected?
You will have to pay more for access to the global network, and sites like YouTube will have to pay for access to you. Services from telecommunications giants will spring up in place of Facebook. If Facebook does not pay them, your connection to Facebook could be significantly degraded (or worse!). CNN or Fox News will ensure that their inane talking heads will be the only information you see. If I were George Orwell, I'd write "imagine the face of Bill O'Reilly, jiggling, yelling, spraying spit at a human face--for ever".

Yes, I realize it is a little one sided.. but honestly!!!!!

now, as of my knowledge, senators that have been discussing this topic at all, the ones that are against it, are all republicans, where as the ones that want the net to be free, are all democrats ( i think maybe 2 republican senators.. maybe) and the rest are not commenting on this issue.

What do you think? do you think that telecomunication industries should be allowed to charge for diffrent "internet plans" and other stuff?

Do you forsee this happening?

Because it scares the crap out of me, and it makes me think that republicans are working hard to ensure more money for major telecommunication industries.

The cons for net neutrality is that they do not have the power of economics behind it. Economics is a strong incentive for growth and prosperity.

However, I don't think it will work well on the Internet model. I like net neutrality for a similar reason that I like for library books to be free and not a paid service. I think the Internet is more of a public good than something that should treated as private property.

So I am for net neutrality.

well instead of having 3 services make TONS of money, and the rest making very little, you have millions of business's that are 100% internet related, or very similar. you have tons of new jobs created.

I mean think of all those peoplethat design multiplayer games? servers? Email clients? Web browsers? Web Pages?

For one, being a common carrier is good economically because it allows for many more options for everybody who isn't an ISP. For two ISP's don't actually own the pipes as it's on public land with a fixed rent rate (like phone lines and train tracks) so they really don't have much room to complain. Not like they were doing bad before the FCC ruled that current law cannot force them to be common carriers.

PBS did a special on This, It was very good. This is a big and important issue that hasn't caught on yet. Telecoms, were suppose to use the money they saved by supporting the Net to build fiber netwoks. Yet all they did was charge us more for the poor services they render. Thus turning it into a monopoly, where they are the only 1's who benefit! They've even tryed to stop individuals and community's from trying to build there own fiber networks in order to monoplize the industry! Its Sad. On top of that, the latest congressional bill on net nuetrality gives the telecoms, power of monopolizing the NET that was born and promoted to produce free speech and open sources for there own business interests! Now many nations are geared or getting geared for fiber. The Main Telecom Network Servers are located in the US also. Plans to relocate them to Brussels are in the works. So once again, the US will import cheap labor for its infrastructure and export expensive services, taking Jobs away from Americans and ordering in a New World Order.

ya.. it's ridiculous how much it cost's to implement city-wide Wi-Fi and such, solely due to the costs that the telecom monoploies drag into it.

I agree with net neutrality. I do not think it will pass though. Do you ever remember not paying for cable? Well okay, when I use to steal it back before I was Christian that is. The internet probably will never go free, because you have to use an ISP or cable company, and they will charge you. Comcast cable has had a million + subscribers alone since they started to offer high speed access. As long as people are willing to pay, they will not only charge, but raise the price for added security, content etc.

...that's not what net neutrality is about. ISP's will always be able to charge a fee for their services the issue at hand is whether or not the pipes are forced to be common carriers.

Well shoot, I guess it was all meaningless words.. Well I'm off to my corner too hide ..

Thanks moniker, your God's best brother..

And they make it known when the search has been censored to ensure people realize what their government is doing to some degree. Would you prefer that they had no search engine to get any sort of window into the internet instead?
