How much data should a network consume? Comcast has come out and said they will start charging extra for data in excess of one TB. Are we gonna have to shut down our internet? We can't afford much more than we shell out now.

Don't panic.. the folks that want our information will figure something out...

Find a different provider. I haven't seen an internet service provider charge for data since AOL. That is just crazy.

where can I look at this information, we are talking about?

We got a notice on our bill and received an email about their intentions. I suppose you could go to Comcast/xfinity website/facebook pages. Yahoo ran a story about it too.

At first I thought you were talking about CFNet and their use of data. Now it sounds like you are speaking of personal individual use at a persons home. Sorry still lost.

Downloading all movies in HD quality is why you are getting notifications.
So quit using your Blu-ray player to surf the internet and play movies through. It's kinda a stupid machine...it doesn't usually care about what screen you have...it just downloads movies in HD quality every time. Even if you have told it your monitor specs.

We're eliminating wireless connections one at a time. My laptop is no longer connected to wifi. The tv is about to be disconnected from wifi and we will only connect it (wired) on weekends IF we see a movie we might want to watch. My wife's phone is now disconnected from wifi. I no longer play a video so readily if I come across one on a sports/news website. We're cutting back more and more....it shows we used 90gb in just 3 days.....wow

90 gb in 3 days?

Change your password...turn off your wi-fi connection by brute force when not using it. Several Someone are hacking your wi-fi network. (They have programs that do it)

Maybe purchase a new wifi system that is more difficult to hack.
Also change your password on your cable connection. It will slow down those in your neighborhood who are hacking.

Then place a data meter on your own system. See if there is a discrepancy between what you are getting billed for and what you are using.

I use a gig a month on my phone...and that's a lot. (No YouTube or movies)

Well. There is a most probable possibility. But, even with it, we think the usage is too high. Our son is trying to get his gaming channel going. He wants to present videos at 1080/60fps(hope I said that correctly). He posts one a day of approx. 10-15 min duration. He says we still should not be consuming so much data.......?????

We have increased our security settings for our router and looked into what is active....we removed several wifi connections we couldn't identify....they no longer have access. It was a much needed "housecleaning". My son downloaded an independent data usage meter to see if Comcast is poking our eyes out. Yesterdays data usage fell to 20gb.....still too high....we think we're using at most....15gb daily.....that's giving Comcast the benefit of the doubt. My son says he thinks our usage is more like 10gb daily even with his gaming channel.

Thinking about wrapping our wireless modem/router in aluminum foil to block any wireless signal. The data usage still seems sky high.

If you remove the antennae...and then surround it with a Faraday cage (aluminum foil connected to a ground wire) then there shouldn't be any Wi-Fi signals coming in or out.

It's either that or someone has a background program(s) running on their computers that are doing the data while connected via LAN cable.

Something else to check.

We've wrapped the modem/router in a single large sheet of aluminum foil and it worked ...no signal getting through.....now we wil narrow our search to the wired devices if we see no drop in usage.

Hmmmm. Even with all the cutting back we were just barely staying under the ! terabyte limit....then suddenly the usage fell way off. My son said he is getting internet chatter that Comcast is inflating customers' usage to collect more money but since word leaked out as to what they're doing they backed off.
