New dirt bikes! Yamaha YZ 85 and TTR 125

Ok, so we got our 12 year old son a small Yamaha TTR 90 beginners bike last year and he really took off on it. Long story short, we have a Pro AMA racer as a friend and my son's been riding on his dirt track the earlier part of the year and has done very, very well.

So our friend says, "Your son needs a bigger bike, and I'll teach him how to race"...

So down to the motorcycle store we went. My son now has a YZ 85 and I've got a TTR 125. His bike is twice the bike I have... Seriously! That being said, my son is still trying to figure out all this power and has crashed and burned more times than I can count. Last time he flipped the bike all the way over while going over a small jump (hit the power band as he hit the jump) and the front tire ran over his back in mid air... Yeah... he's still sore, but he's still sticking to it :D

I'll try and get some more pictures of us out on the bikes if the weather stays nice ;)

Thanks Nacho!

Yes, they are a lot of fun! Well... they can be a lot of fun lol!

When my son hit that small jump and the bike flipped over and tagged him in the back (Imagine the front tire whipping over you and hitting you on your back) he was having second thoughts about this whole racing thing... Anyway, we're now pulling back a bit and working on some basic throttle control.

Have you ever rode a 2 stroke?

a few times, but not much.

We ride more snowmobiles up here then bikes.:D

And I have done my share of falling off those and it isn't fun.

Keep encouraging him and take it slow for awhile and once he gets a feel for the bike he will be flying around that track in no time.:thumbsup

Oh yeah, your from ND! I used to drive truck across 94 for a few years. Absolutly loved the northern lights in the winter. Speaking of winter, it doesn't snow in SD does it? I think it just blows in from ND :lol

Anyway, yes I'm still encouraging him and for some odd reason my over protective wife isn't saying much about his bruises and road rash... But yeah, he's slowing down a bit and is actually afraid of the bike. That's not a bad thing for now ;)

The power from this little 85 2 stroke is amazing.. I can't hardly ride it simply because I'm so big it's hard to get and keep my weight to the front of the bike because when it hits the power band, it snaps so hard it throws me back, and I inevitably do a wheelie, even when hitting second gear.

These newer bikes aint like the older 2 strokes... His bike is just fierce!

I just have to poke in here and say Napoleon Dynamite is one of my all time favorite movies, it's a treasure! :thumbsup

:toofunny I think my son has the whole movie memorized verbatim!

Are you drinking 2 %? :lol

But yeah, I could see Reba out jumping her quad in the sand dunes :toofunny:toofunny

Hey Reba, post us a picture of your quad :thumbsup

Well, we had a blast with our new bikes and I think they are all broken in now... Literally :lol

So, my son's bike is on his third spark plug cause they keep fouling out. We just went to a hotter plug so that should help.

In the meantime, our daughter came over to ride my bike with him and it was running rough, so my son thinks, "I'll just replace the spark plug" and figured that since it came out hard, it should go in just as hard, if not harder. Ended up stripping the plug hole all the way down... Not an expensive fix, but certainly a time consuming fix because to get the head off is a major task since it's an over head cam that frankly, I don't have time for.

But wait, it gets better :D

I knew his chain was getting loose and should have tightened it... Well, the chain ended up breaking the master link when my son made a jump and wound itself around the shift shaft. No biggie since the link is a 3 dollar part. But what I noticed last night when I was repairing the chain was a puddle of fluid on the ground and the bike was in neutral and wouldn't go into gear after that... Upon further inspection I found that the shift shaft was bent which was causing the leak... When I get the transmission all tore apart, I'm hoping that's all that bent or broke.

And to think, I bought new bikes because I didn't want to work on them... :grumpy

LOL we get bikes so we can ride one weekend and spend the other 3 fixin' em

I went to post the photo of the quad and i clicked the wrong button! the pic is gone...

Simple red polaris 400 2005 Hubby would not get me a more powerful one..:nono2

ha ha ha!

Well, Just found out that the shift shaft won't be in until next week. Looks like no riding this weekend.

Too much piling up... I need a vacation before I go :screwloose

In the early 70s we were riding dirt bikes. We were about hour and halve from a store that would even come close to having simple parts.... My old Honda 125 had a flat, well if i ride i try to do simple repairs and a flat is something anyone should be able to fix. So off comes the tire ...spraying the old tube with soap bubbles it was more like where is NOT leaking,,, I have the bicycle tube patch kit i am patching and patching...I think i am all done turn on the air again.... well it is leaking around the valve stem Now i am in tears if we go to town the time is gone yup bike riding girls cry.... I now have all the layers of junk around stem removed that ol tube was cracked what a mess... I get this idea find a empty bullet casing punch a hole in the biggest peace of patch left glued that thing up I WENT RIDING! John (hubby) hung that ol tube on the garage wall for years..
