Well,it seems that we do not have any hot water at this place. The landlord tries to make these repairs himself and he doesn't have a clue what he is doing. :neutral

Maybe Edward can help you figure out what is going on? He is a plumbing and heating guy. :shrug

just in case it happens to be this simple check the main power box if the water heater is electric... when checking power switches they can look ok and not really be on so turn them off and on

Why do we say hot water heater when it heats cold water?

Because I am clueless. What does it sound like when the hot water is turned on?

I already had to wash my hair in cold water.
It's better for your hair!! Washing it in hot water can damage your scalp. Thank your landlord for saving you from baldness!!!

Now that is looking on the positive side :)

Maybe....it is an electric water heater. The house is old..1977.

Did you find the breaker box and turn the breaker on an off like Reba suggested?
The heater may be much newer than your house.

Often there is no sound... .. you should have a 'box' that looks similar to the picture... see if a switch in there is labeled hot water heater... flip it off then on sometimes they are a bit hard to flip... do so even if it looks like it is on...

We replaced the water heater in this house only because we had to jerk it around to get it out need a new floor, it was installed in 1957 and working fine...

Boy that was a good one!

1977 is not an old house this one is about 120 ...

Deb it was the style that is square and looks like a dryer.. to many layers of flooring had been built up around it...

Here I am. :)

If it's electric, check the breaker box and flip it back and forth like reba said because they can trip without flipping the switch, but no power comes through them/

If it's gas, take the lower cover plate off and look in it to see if the pilot is burning or not. If it is, dial the temperature control up to a hotter setting to see if you can make the burner come on. If the pilot isn't burning, light it. Turn the top knob to Pilot position, push it down and hold it down and reach in and light the pilot. Continue holding down the gas knob for 60 seconds or so and then release it, it should stay on, then turn the knob back around to the ON position which should bring on the burner.

If you're not comfortable lighting the pilot, most utilities companies will come light it for free, or maybe grab a neighbor to help.

That'll be 89.95 please....:lol

post back if you have any questions. There are some newer water heaters out there with electronic ignition, wiring and so forth. I'd have to know what you have to be able to help with it, but I could! I'd just need the model and serial number and the brand.

That is a good question that I've heard posed before! They do have hot water heaters, but we call them steam boilers, lol.

I flipped the switch on then off.And my check is in the mail :lol It is electric. The name on it says "President" Sears. So apparently it is a Sears water heater.

Yes,it is ok.

So it's an electric water heater?

Not much you can do yourself with an electric one. If you have a voltage tester and can use it, I can walk you through checking out the unit.

Prolly a bad element. There's only 4 pieces to it, two elements, two thermo stats. It's usually the top element because the top one cycles more so wears out faster.
