[ Young Earth ] Noah's Flood

I'd like to discuss some of the things that we would expect to see on a global scale that would be remnant of Noah's flood.

First off, I'd like to talk about this flood and ask the question. How did God flood the earth? All to often we have this picture in our minds of this cartoonish looking ark with a giraffe sticking it's head out the top of the ark.. and I think this really underscores the true narrative.

From scripture, we see that it rained for 40 days and 40 nights, and the fountains of the deep opened up. We also see that it continued to rain and the fountains of the deep continued through 150 days.

We don't often think about these "fountains of the deep". But science has a solution to this. So I'll ask you all, what do you think these "fountains of the deep" were?

Well, I think something has to be established in unison here. The earth, pre-flood, was a lot different than post-flood. Mountains were wimpy, the continents were all one mess instead of six different ones. But anyways, to your question:

The "fountains of the deep" are the giant lakes and oceans that live underground. There is a huge one under Asia that has more water than the Artic Ocean. There is another under the Middle East (and it is the source of all their water). I read in some place that there is more water underground than in all the above ground oceans!

I'm in favor of this theory here http://www.creationscience.com/onlinebook/PartII.html

I will have to read the article! Sounds great!

And yes, the water underground was my point! Now then, we can all tell that if you take all the continents and pull them together, they fit like a puzzle.

so, is it possible that all the continents were together and as it broke apart, those underground reservoirs opened up to flood the earth? I find this idea very plausible, and the Bible describes this event going on for 150 days.

This would account for the formation of the larger mountains we have around the globe as well, since we know these mountains were formed by the continents moving. As a plug for creationist, I've read that it was a creationist who came up with the theory of plate tectonics, and he was dismissed by evolutionist at first.

Opening the fountains of the deep explain plate tectonics to me. I see a massive earthquake that sent the wooly mammoth up north.
We have a few miles from here petrified redwood . I live in high desert Great Basin. nothing but sage and jack rabbets. The redwoods were here they like the fog of the coast or was it the mist God had over the earth?

it did cover the whole earth! Clearly says so in the Bible.

The key is that at the time right before the flood the world was a lot flatter and it all fit together in one super duper continent. The mountains grew on account of the flood and all the tectonic action. During an earth quake a mountain can grow at a rate of 200+feet per hour! At that rate Mt. Everest would only take a week to grow to its current height! Also, the super continent was probably a lot bigger than all the little ones are now, since most of the above ground water was probably at one point the water in those underground reserves. When all that water came up the weight of the water plus ground made everything collapse, and so a lot of the ocean floor was probably once a continent.

Absolutely Pard!

So we can kind of visualize the earthquakes and the continent splitting up to form our current continents as a massive shift in the earth's state reforms the landscape.

As the water is forced up from the underground wells, it would leave empty caverns in it's place as the continents shifted and the oceans covered them. When the weight of the oceans put enough strain on these caverns, it is plausible that the caverns would collapse. When they collapsed, it would drop the ocean floors (btw, scientists believe the ocean floors are relatively young). As the ocean floors collapsed, water would run off the continent and fill the oceans and leaving the land once again dry and inhabitable.

When we look at the events that caused the massive shift of continents (earthquakes, volcanic activity etc), we would expect to see many things including mass extinction of ocean dwellers as the waters became toxic with volcanic activity etc.

While evolutionists and creationists disagree in the age of the earth, modern science affirms a mass extinction in the oceans. You can read the article here.

You can also read how this would have effected land animals here

I think it's amazing how the Bible talks of a mass extinction, and although we disagree with evolutionists at to the timing of events, Science does show that a mass extinction did occur. But not only does Science believe that this occurred, but that it occurred rapidly, just as the Bible states.

And that's because the Bible is in perfect harmony with every facet of reality. Today people have lost sight of this fact (mostly) but the initial push for science in the western world was to study and learn about God's creation! All those old time scientists were devote Christians who desired to learn more about our Creator!

According to the Bible, the Ark was roughly 450X50X75 feet! That's a huge ship! An independent company looked at the dimensions of the ark and concluded several things. First, you can't build a wooden boat much larger than Noah's ark, it just wouldn't float. Also, I read that the dimensions of the ark were in proportion to our current cargo ships! Not only that, but the Ark could have sustained 90 foot waves!

As far as cargo space, the animals would have taken only about half the ship! We have to keep in mind that Noah brought 2 or 7 of each "Kind" of animal. In other words, you wouldn't find a house cat, lion, tiger, bobcat on board because these all are part of what is considered a "type". Noah would have brought a pair of that "Type" and they would have had the genetic diversity to adapt to their environment post flood. Creation scientist have ran the numbers and estimated that there would have been about 20,000 different "types" and common sense would tell us that you don't bring a full grown elephant onto an ark for a year. Instead, you bring a baby elephant for obvious reasons. Also, on average animals are pretty small and don't require a very small space to house.

We know that animals adapt to their environment, just like we have different "races" of people. Each race adapted to it's environment, and so did each "type" of animal. This goes to show the genetic diversity that God has placed within it's creation!

That's pretty cool Pard!

You might want to check this out. They are trying to build an authentic Ark with what they believe would have been ancient methods.

http://arkencounter.com/

They have a section that they've already built true to scale and form. Honestly, it's pretty awesome! Yup, been there! I do hope that they can come up with the money to build the whole thing.

Some time in the 70s there was this bible class with a guy who had been a Rabbi. He talked a bit about the flood... He says God selected the critters for the ark. I cant not remember which english word he said could/should be translated as God doing the selection.

lovely not an easy answer. lol jeff. darn it.

ramban says that noah took of the clean beast to be offered to god and those that came to him were brought to him by god. the words clean and unclean are explained but not as you say jeff, he believes that noah knew the torah and was taught what was clean.

it agree with that as we know that some things are implied that later were done in exodus.ramban refers to rashi alot here.

in short of course.

Sounds like an agreement between your people and my people. hehe I hate that phrase and have not used it before.... I would imagine the stories were handed down around a camp fire... God put all those folks in place like Moses' real mom she knew he was special etc...

Jason any new photos of Jaci?

hmm i will have to bug monica for them. i will do so.i just asked so when she puts them on fb i will add them to my collection and then post.

oddly ramban believes that the Eternal(what they often call God) told moses what to write and he learned via some callabic thing. i dont buy the latter but well i was taught that moses was told what happened by many a pastors. though it makes sense to think that the orally way of mentioning the stories surely had been the case.
