Eph 6

NIV
Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment
with a promise— “so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life
on the earth.

questions:

1. who are the children,
2. Who are the parents 'in the Lord'
3. ...that you may enjoy long life

It's talking about our human children. Parents in the Lord...means, in the ways of the Lord. The parents should be in the Lord, and the children also....that they may enjoy a long life, means here on earth.

I've brought this passage to my childrens attention a few times, with the warning that is implied, if you dishonor your parents here on earth, they may die an early death because of it.

I'm beginning to think that my children is my big test in life. The things they have done to me...the way they speak and treat me...wow. It's a challenge for me to forgive them and keep them forgiven, and to love them as Christ loves me.
That can be a tall order if you are wronged in a big way by them and the disrespect is consistent.

It's hard sometimes brother. Lord give me strength and an understanding heart. :pray

that is why I don't like the niv. go to exodus 20 and read that from the torah. paul is quoting the torah.

just because your dad, mom was useless, didn't love you as they ought, doenst mean you get a break and get the chance to be disrespectful. doesn't mean you have to allow them to harm you if they are still abusive, just that you are called to be submissive whenever its possible.

not that I haven't failed that command. my dad isn't much of a worker in that he made a lot of money. at times he has belittled me. it would be an ego check for me to listen to him. yet he is my dad and I don't make it a habit of bad mouthing him.

thank god for the blood , I did a lot of wrong to my mom. but well that is under the blood and in the past. I have told my dad off back then as well.

Class...

Who says it indicates ".... parents in the Lord?" I see it as "Because you are in the Lord, obey your parents."

You don't seriously think those commas were found in the original text, do you?

Does your child get to determine if you are "in the Lord" or not, so he can decide if. perhaps, he wants to choose to obey you?

That's a good attitude brother, and very correct. I think we've all been belittled by our parents at some time. My dad didn't ease up on that until a few years ago when I told him, hey, I'm almost 50 years old now and am who I am, when do we get to start talking like adults to each other? So he did, God bless him. :)

If our parents treat us bad, it doesn't let us off the hook. We still should honor them and respect them. Don't let them interfere with your walk in Christ.

True, but same thing as I said, right? Or do you mean the way Classik posed his question?

Yes, I meant that Class really might want to reconsider deciding the Word has to be explained the way he thinks it reads.

Oh I see. I thought that sort've, that he may have posted it that way to see how people thought or to make them think?

From what I've observed, I seriously doubt he puts that much thought into his posting.

Here's what that verse means.

Colossians 3
20 Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord.

It's pretty much self explanatory.

The "long life" is a reference to the promise of a long life for those who walk in the ways of the Lord.

My :twocents.

Take a closer look at the use of punctuation dashes

I took this post of Classik's to be saying, look closely at the commas, they are incorrectly placed. Where they are just doesn't make any sense.

Like all submission commandments we obey but we do not obey what is against what the Lord teaches, "as in the Lord."
You don't have to obey if your parent were to tell you to hurt someone else in some way. Stupid parent, smart kid.

oops! Actually the third point on the OP is also a question.

to further clarify it, is this command limited to only parents and children? How about people and their spiritual leaders (spiritual leaders who are not the biological parents)

I don't believe so.

Hebrews 13....(NKJV)
7 Remember those who rule over you, who have spoken the word of God to you, whose faith follow, considering the outcome of their conduct.

<snip>

17 Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive, for they watch out for your souls, as those who must give account. Let them do so with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you.

This is a command for children. Not everyone is a parent, but everyone is someones child and has a parent. SO if you have parents, obey it.
