Obituary - Common Sense (funny, sad, true)

If you don't have the common sense not to stick your finger in a fence with signs that say "Beware of dog" who's responsibilty is it? Why is it necessary to warn people not to drive a vehicle with a sunscreen in place? To avoid lawsuit? Probably, because somebody might just do that. It's the way of things and people are getting away with it. There are lawyers who make a tidy sum of money each year by putting the blame on someone else. Your insurances for home, health and auto are as high as they because of it. People sue for any ridiculous reason and get awarded for it. If I wreck on my bike because I'm doing handstands on the seat to impress the girl next door do I sue the maker of the bike? Sounds crazy but that's what's happening... and we are paying for it either directly or indirectly. Who do you think pays to have "Don't operate vehicle with sunscreen in place" printed on the back? Who's paying for warning labels not to drink Clorox or put your head into a plastic bag? And who do you think pays for coffee cups to be upgraded to warn that the coffee is hot? Heck, I paid for hot coffee and it had better be hot.

We pay for all this. That's just common sense. And society pays for the loss of integrity and good ethics.

Well said, Potluck.
I think it's a very sad world when everyone wants to blame someone else for whatever befalls them. Personally, I believe we all have common sense, but only some of us choose to put it to use...kind of like our muscles. If we don't use them, they atrophy.

Ok, everyone take responsibility for your own actions and choices.

That is not common sense. Common sense is prudent judgment aka thinking things through.

If you don't use common sense, then you may do stupid things that you will have to take responsibility for. And there are those who do not do the latter.

I think this is what you guys are getting at, no?

In which case, common sense and responsibility are still two different things. I can see the relatedness you guys appear to be drawing though.

We need to put accountability in the proper places. For example, people talk about the woman who spilled hot coffee from McDonalds. People make fun of this woman.

In summary, the woman spilled coffee on herself (happens all the time) and received 3rd degree burns and had to get skin grafting (dones not happen all the time). McDonalds coffee was unusually hot (180 degrees) as opposed to 140 to 160 degrees of other coffees. She was initially awarded a few million dollars but this was reduced several times to less than $600,000. The judge decided that McDonalds was 80% at fault and the woman was 20% at fault. The reason the lawsuit was so high is that McDonalds was being punished (since they had 700 other similar cases without cooling down their coffee). McDonalds makes about $1.35 million per day just from serving coffee.

When I learned all of this, I did not see the woman as someone too stupid to understand coffee is hot. What we should learn is that we should be careful judging a story before we know all the facts.

That is a good lesson for all of us to learn, Quath. I wasn't aware of all the facts in that case.
But you have to admit, our society has gotten out of hand with blaming others and not taking responsibility for one's own actions. It's a very "sue-happy" country we live in. I think that many people, when injured or wronged, automatically think: "Maybe I can sue for that?!?"
I agree that we shouldn't judge a story before we know all the facts (better not to judge at all), but something is definitely wrong in a society in which companies are so worried about getting sued that they have to label sunscreens with a warning not to drive with them in place, or warn us not to drink Clorox, etc. etc.
I really do understand your point. I'm sure you get mine.

Yeah, I think there is some balance. I am not exactly sure what it is. I remember hearing about a guy who went to his friends house for a beer. He slipped in the kitchen and then sued his friend. I also remember a friend who had a trampoline. A kid snuck into his yard, got hurt on it and the parents sued. I do not like that kind of attitude.
