It's surprising that their brains, which are genetically and anatomically so very different than ours, often work very similarly, and even use many of the same chemicals. It suggests that there are some things that are required for intelligence, at least for beings of the sort that were brought forth by the earth on this planet.
We do share a common ancestor with molluscs, which did have a nervous system. Unfortunately, we don't have any examples of life apart from a common ancestor. It would be very interesting to learn if other kinds of life would be possible.
