Edit : Common Blue Mud Dauber Wasp ^^^^^^^^^^^

I was stung today right in the middle of my middle finger , ouch ! Some swelling in finger and hand now , applying ice off and on .
Praise the Lord I am not allergic to stings .

Could not identify the wasp , smaller than the usual wasp by a third and all black . Looked at 65 different wasp pictures but that did not help me , guess I need to see a wasp mug book :WInkx .

It looks almost like a mud dauber. Not quite sure.

Yeah that's what the pic is , they sting too but are not aggressive as paper wasps in my experience . Mud daubers like to build in my garden shed .

They build in and around my patio too.

I've always found the ground nesting yellow jackets to be the most vicious of the stinging insects. If you get close enough to disturb their nest they will chase you and sting you for 20-30 yards. I've never had problems with wasps and daubers in that way. I'm always knocking down wasp nests and mud dauber nests and even if there are some around the nest as long as you stand back 5-7' they just fly around where the nest was for about 10 minutes and then disappear.

I was once mowing my lawn and the tire of my lawn tractor went into a yellow jacket nest and they chased me and chased me. I jumped off the mower like I was on fire and was running flailing my arms and some road crew that was passing by stopped to ask if I was ok. Those yellow jackets can be vicious and they'll come at you as an aggressive army. Be very careful around them.

I like to use high pressure water hose nozzle for wasp nest knock down .

I generally just use a broom or stick of some kind for wasps and daubers. However, I have read that the best way to deal with the ground dwelling yellow jacket is to wait until night when they are all in their nest sleeping. Go out with a flashlight and flood their nest hole with water and dish soap or some other poison. I've even poured gasoline down in the holes. And it works. They don't get riled up and come at you because they're resting and caught unawares.
