Options to purchasing toys with lead

A local afternoon talk show that has been addressing the problem of toy recalls due to the lead content. They have been discussing the options to buying potentially dangerous toys for Christmas. They offered a lot of good ideas, and I thought it would make a good thread for a little brainstorming.

Some of the options to buying toys:

Movie tickets
Concerts tickets
Tickets to sporting events
Tickets to the zoo or a museum.
Year round passes to a theme park or other attraction.
Books
Music lessons
Sailing lessons
Art lessons
Any other class for other skill that the child would enjoy learning.

Please add some of your own ideas to the list.

The show offered the names of a few websites that give more information on toy safety. As soon as they post them on their website, I will post them for you.

DVD's, CD's and video games are all on my kid's list. There are a number of good games that kids can enjoy that aren't filled with violence. We just had our Parent/Teacher confrence and our teacher recommended MathBlaster as a fun game that the kids enjoy playing and will actually increase their math skills. And, since it has all levels of math problems, I can get one game for both my 5th grader and my 2nd grader and they can each play at their own leve.
