Road Map in the Back Seat?

By Al Kamen

Friday, June 27, 2003; Page A27

"Imagine our surprise Wednesday to read in the Israeli paper Haaretz (online), that Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Abu Mazen, meeting recently with militants to enlist their support for a truce with Israel, said that, when they met in Aqaba, President Bush had told him this: " God told me to strike at al Qaeda and I struck them, and then he instructed me to strike at Saddam [ Hussein], which I did, and now I am determined to solve the problem in the Middle East. If you help me I will act, and if not, the elections will come and I will have to focus on them."

So who needs to find WMD or a link with al Qaeda when the orders come from The Highest Authority?

Two calls to the White..."

I'll start with a confession, as it's good for the soul...

I was gonna ignore this typically cynical OP by Rez, but as faith & cynicism are opposites, & as there are many cynics who need to see that clearly if they are ever to learn to 'humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God so that, in due time, He can lift you up.."

OK, let's 1st reprint how that article continues:-

Two calls to the White House for clarification went unreturned, but colleague Glenn Kessler did some digging. The Haaretz reporter, Arnon Regular, read what the paper said were minutes of the Palestinians' meeting to Kessler and another colleague, who is an Arabic speaker.

The Arabic-speaking colleague's translation, was this: "God inspired me to hit al Qaeda, and so I hit it. And I had the inspiration to hit Saddam, and so I hit him. Now I am determined to solve the Middle East problem if you help. Otherwise the elections will come and I will be wrapped up with them."

Even then, there's uncertainty. After all, this is Abu Mazen's account in Arabic of what Bush said in English, written down by a note-taker in Arabic, then back into English.

But one thing seems consistent: The election season is going to be a huge distraction from the Road Map, something the White House has always insisted would not be the case.

It is extremely fashionable for Brits & Europeans to mock GWB & the USA, simply because there are now @ 3/4 generations who have grown up in UK & EU without any godly influence

They can't understand how folk can have faith in the Almighty Creator & disparage faith in the Bible as antiquated

Some readers may have heard me debating on BBC Radio Merseyside @ 10 Jan - between Nutty Prof Richard Dawkins' 2 pathetic documentaries calling for the rejection & destruction of all religion

I focussed on Intelligent Design evidence & challenged any atheist evolutionist to come to Chester Zoo that Sat, where I preached creation twice in the zoo & once at Bache station nearby - no atheist challenged me

I also reminded listeners - live & on BBC - @ the many fulfilled Bible prophecies

Anyway, what I want to ask readers is: try imagining yourself in GWB's position, with the huge responsibilities involved, OK?

Who can you turn to?

Who can you trust?

If any of you saw God TV @ 5/6 hours ago, the thrust of the message was not to be ruled by human opinions, but to seek the mind of God thru His Word - the Bible - thru prayer & thru talking to wise & experienced Christian advisers

The speaker was careful to distinguish between self-seekers & God-seekers

It was the very witty Hillsong pastor, Brian Houston, who I got chatting to at the AoG Pentecostal spring conference in Pwllheli 2 years ago

He said that, all too often, when folk say, 'I'm entitled to my opinion', what they really mean is that they want to force their opinions on you: they feel very insecure unless they can subject all around them to their will

As 1 Corinthians 1 puts it, "Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this world? Has not God made foolish he wisdom of the world?"

It goes on to say how, because man typically chooses to ignore God's Word & God's will in the decisions of life, God lets him see & suffer the dire consequences of such folly

While typing this, my mind has been echoing that classic gospel song: "Where Could I Go But To The Lord?"

& that's not just if U R in GWB's position

I'd left on God TV while getting ready for church & heard the very witty wife of Abundant Life Church pastor Paul Scanlon addressing their women's 'Cherish' session @ the folly of pretending to know it all & have everything together

The plain fact is that God loves each & evryone whom He has made

He has the most wonderful plan for your life & wants to guide you thru it, step by step, day by day

GWB?

Many folk mock him as not being the most intellectual guy on the planet

His greatest strength is that he knows his limitations & seeks godly counsel & wise advice

So as to not be misunderstood let me make this plain. Believe it or not I am also a conservative Republican having voted for Bush twice. I voted for Bush not because I thought he was the best but because he was probably the least offensive. Regarding how the wording plays out in the article it is clear that Bush is or was basing his decisions on "perceptions' of divine influence. Cosidering the real state of affairs in Iraq expecially during the past week it is becoming clear there is a question as to "whom" was really speaking to him. Perhaps his cause and ours as well would have been better served had he picked up a history book and followed the advise of those who went before and failed. As to following godly counsel and seeking wise advise I think the record is clear whereever you look that this was not the case. The pages continue to swell with those who have come forward and advised him either not to go in or go in with many more troops.

"You can fly over a land forever; you may bomb it, atomize it, pulverize it and wipe it clean of life but if you desire to defend it, protect it, and keep it for civilization you must do this on the ground, the way the Roman Legions did, by putting your young men into the mud."
