Out of Harm's Way
by Jack Thompson
Tyndale House Publishers (2005).

Jack, an outraged father and activist lawyer, is on a mission to protect children from the violent and obscene video games, music lyrics, shock jock radio shows, and television programs he says are creating a culture of violence and degradation. Going beyond outrage, Thompson chronicles his own journey from bystander to activist and offers the sociological, medical, scientific, and legal evidence that will motivate all Americansâ€â€especially parentsâ€â€to get involved.

Since 1988, crusading attornye Jack Thompson has been putting himself into harm's way to keep us and our children out of it. Despite death threats, media taunts, and attempts by big corporations to bully him into silence, this unlikely, not always likeable crusader is leading the charge against violence and obscenity in entertainment.

I despise Jack Thompson. The man is a name calling imbecile with the self control of a two year old.

Didn't he say that the Sims 2 included pubic hair and just generally detailed genitalia?

I don't think he really researches what he's talking about, judging from that incident.

Also, I don't tend to go for obscenity laws. That book would probably just end up making me angry.

No, of course not. I just don't think we should legislate against it, in most cases. I did a project last year about, oh I can't remember the case name, but there was a guy who was sending people unwanted pornographic material. The courts said, no - you can't do that. I was fully in support of that.

Cable TV and such, those shouldn't be censored. You're paying for it. If you don't want to hear swearing, don't get it.

Even movie ratings, I think go too far. I'm all for voluntary ratings, such as it is with video games, but I really think it's the parent's responsibility to make sure their kids aren't getting MA video games, or seeing R-rated movies.
Back to TV, I like the voluntary ratings system, and the V-Chip-thingy, I think (I don't know much about it). Parents deciding what's right for their own kids, sounds good anyway.
