Bible Study ovecoming temptation

Oh I would just like to know, how people overcame tempation.

Mind you this would be your personal experiences with the biblical backup that helped you along the way. I just want to know how God works in our lives.

For me personally He is still helping me win the war against temptation.

It took me to look for Him first...granted thats a given :D . But He started in the place where I struggled the most even with out realizing how much it seperated me and Him. For me, like a lot of men, was sexual tempation. He helped me start this fight, and we are doing wonderfully well! But I still have a long ways to go.

A couple of verses that help me out are:

1 Peter 2:16 - As free, and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God.

for those who don't understand the KJV:

Amplified Bible - [Live] as free people, [yet] without employing your freedom as a pretext for wickedness; but [live at all times] as servants of God.

And Matthew 11:25-30 - At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.

26Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight.

27All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.

28Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

29Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

30For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

The list could go on and on, but I want to see what others have done.

Well I'm excited to see what God has done for you all!

The best way to overcome temptation is to let God keep you from it. We do this by confesssion and forgiveness. Instead of not sinning by an act of the will, you confess it and God replaces your heart with love and forgiveness instead of the sin itself. It really is a beautiful design. All you have to know is that you are forgiven for it. :)

2 Peter 2:9, KJV

The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished:

I must disagree with Heidi on this one, God will not keep you from temptation. However, 1 Corinthians 10:13 states "There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it."(KJV) What this is saying is that God will not put more temptation on you than you can bear and above that he provides a way of escape during temptation. The trick is being able to recognize the escape during this time. The bottom line is whatever you feed the most is going to win. If you give in to temptation and dwell on it, you're going to fall. If you ask God to help you through it and to show you the escape he has prepared, you can make it through it. I wish I could say that I always look for the way out, but I don't. So if you give in, just pick yourself up and go forward. This is where Heidi's saying that he will replace the sin with love and forgiveness is very much true. One example then I'm done, I have a problem with drinking and I'm trying to get away from it. I can pass a liquor store and crave it. I was weak once and pulled in to the store, at that very moment someone called my cellphone wanting me to meet them somewhere. All I could do was drive off and thank God for allowing me not to fall this time. I hope this has helped some.

James 1:13 & 14, God tempts no one but we r tempted when we r drawn away because of our own lust. It is something that we want. WANT is why the angels rebelled. 1/3 of the angels rebelled because they WANTED what God would not allow and they WANTED it MORE than they WANTED God. If they would have WANTED God MOST then they would not have rebelled. To truly have God's Spirit in our heart it requires that God is the MOST IMPORTANT of all to us and more important than anyone else. When we get to heaven there will be no tempter but u will still WANT. We r here to be tested and tried, molded and made ready for heaven. We must come to the place that we do not want and will not sin. God will have no more rebellion in His kingdom. If we can serve God no matter the cost like Job and Joseph (go through the fire). If we can surrender our will and do God's will for our life (take up our cross). If we can say no to sin here while being tempted (overcome). Then we will have no problem serving and obeying God in His kingdom. God will not just zap and make us to where we will never sin nor rebel against Him. If He were to do that He would be programming us and we would be no more than robots. It is a matter of quality of life that God made man and angel free willed. This is why Jesus said FEW.

What are you saying here quad? I get that you are saying that GOD does not tempt us and I agree with that. However he does ALLOW us to be tempted. I think what the poster was asking is how do you overcome temptation. I've been in situations where I didn't want to give in spiritually, but the flesh is sometimes stronger than our spirit(and it's out fault). We allow the flesh to be stronger.
