I have been taking Tramadol 100mg a day for 10 years now. For back pain. You could say I'm addicted. Go more than 24 hours without a tablet and I have nightmarish withdrawal symptoms.
Usually I go to the same doctor and he gets approval to give me 6 months of prescriptions. Long term.
Recently the rules have changed. So I can't get long term prescriptions . I have to see the doctor every 3 weeks to get pain medication. Bulk billing so no cost to see doctor but the inconvenience is annoying to say the least.
On top of this, a few days ago I went to see a different doctor in the same clinic. Because the time suited me better.
She gave me the 3rd degree....
Why are you taking this medicine?
Are you addicted?
Have you tried to quit?
Why don't you see your regular doctor?
and so on.....
I realise they are entitled to ask questions but it was bordering on rudeness. As if I am a criminal for asking to get pain medication.
Considering if you live in countries like India, you can get the same medication over the counter.and it's cheaper.
Sounds like I'm justifying or rationalising an addiction. Still I have genuine back pain. I am entitled to get pain medicine.
From her point of view, she must get a lot of people asking for pain medication and in high doses. There is an overall community problem with analgesic addiction and doctors are seemingly trying to address that.
Now I am thinking to myself "can I quit". I don't want to go through defending myself for wanting pain medication.
Ok...bit of a rant this...hope you got this far...thanks..
