I'm so glad I downloaded the app for Unlocking the Bible with Pastor Colin Smith. I listen to it most every night as I'm laying in bed.

I have learned a lot from listening to him about spiritual truths regarding all kinds of topics - all centered in the Bible and in Christ.

Tonight I learned from John 1:29-36 exactly what I have always been unclear of regarding baptism. John the Baptist baptized with water for those who were wanting to get ready to meet God. They would come confessing their sins and being immersed in water in order to show they are identifying with the Messiah John the Baptist was speaking of.

When Jesus came to be baptized by John, John said, "Behold the lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!" and "this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit." The Pastor explained how the word "baptize" means to immerse or saturate. So in essence, Jesus has come to saturate our mind, heart and everything about us with the Holy Spirit - the very Spirit of God. It says Jesus will do this and continues to do this with us, since the tense of the verb "baptizes" is present tense, continuing in action. And when the disciples of John saw and heard who Jesus was, they left John the Baptist (the one who baptizes with water) and cleaved to Jesus, who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.

So now I understand water baptism and Holy Spirit baptism. Water baptism is done once, and it doesn't save us. But Jesus promises to baptize with the Holy Spirit throughout our lifetime.

john baptism was external Christ was eternal

Jesus sends His Holy Spirit to indwell us the moment of our Spiritual rebirth as we are baptized/immersed in the Holy Spirit at that time. John 3:5-7. It is not a continual baptism of the Holy Spirit, but only given by Jesus just as His sacrifice on the cross was a one time event that covers all generations that will believe in Him, John 14:26.

If you would like to understand baptism at a deeper biblical and theological viewpoint, I would suggest the author John Mark Hicks who is the professor of theology at Lipscomb university. His book on the matter is simply called, Come to the Water.

Enjoy.
