Hmm...I have Open Office installed on this computer but I've never used it. That's as far as I've dared to go with open source stuff.

I take it that any program that installs in Windows will install and run correctly in Ubuntu? I would be very interested in trying something new like that but maybe on the old machine.

I use Open Office for Linux on my Ubuntu installs. It works fine, but I opted to 'resave" some files in their native Open Office format to preserve document formatting.

As for Windows apps working under Linux, yes and no. They don't install unless you have some sort of Windows emulator installed, like Wine. Even then, it's hit and miss. I've gotten a mainframe emulator and a Bible software (Quick Verse) to work with some tweaking of the Wine software. Many apps have Linux versions (like Firefox and Thunderbird) so you go for them. There are plenty of Bible packages out there for Linux and most Linux packages (like Ubuntu) already come with most everything you would need and install automatically with the OS.
 
Well, I should mention that I did get one of those computers on Saturday (the one in the first link). They happened to have a guy in who does the builds and we had it by 5pm even though we ordered it around 12:30pm.

So far this is a screaming machine. I downloaded the demos of Crysis and Call of Duty 4 and it handles them no problem with the settings cranked. It only cost an extra $65.00 for an additional 4GB of "gaming" RAM (didn't know there was such a thing). And also had Office Small Business OEM installed. With a monitor, mouse and keyboard added on, it was still a fantastic deal compared to Dell.

Although, one weird thing just happened before this: I was logged in to MSN Messenger and someone added themselves to my contacts list! In XP and 2000 it always says that so-and-so wants to add you to their contact list and asks for approval. This time it just told me that someone added themselves. Sure enough, there they were. I deleted them and logged out.
