My emachines w2888 was off yesterday morning and it would not turn on. I checked to make sure it was plugged in. Nothing happens when you hit the power button so I am assuming it is the power supply? Any thoughts? Thanks!

e Machines are notorious for failing PSU's. They were supposed to have gotten better with them. I had that problem a few years ago with my wife's e Machine' which I am on now. I just replaced it with some spare PSU's I had laying around the house. See if you can find one used if you don't want to spend the money for a new one.

I ordered a refurbished 300 w PSU off of ebay. I was hoping to get it here by Monday because I was leaving town Monday for work. It does not look like it will arrive so that means I have to leave my laptop home for the wife. A week without internet; yikes! It may be from God as I will have some time alone with Him in my hotel room in the evening without any distractions from the internet so it is probably good.

Yeah sometimes, you have to get away from the internet.

I have seen this problem a few times. Try this.

- Turn off the computer and unplug it
- Turn on the On/Off switch for a few moments
- Turn it off
- Plug it back in
- Turn the switch on.

Sometimes the motherboard goes into a strange state where it thinks that it is supposed to be off. What this does is that when you turn it on while unplugged, is that it drains the capacitors that are helping to hold the information in memory. When you drain all the power, the memory goes away that tells the motherboard to stay off. When it turn it back on, hopefully things are back to normal.

If Tom's suggestion doesn't work, you can still test the power supply by doing this:

Disconnect the ATX connector that goes from the motherboard to the power supply. You can power up an ATX power supply by shorting the green wire with any black ground wire. Normally, The ATX power supply will not turn on normally without a motherboard connected to it. There's only one green wire and there are a couple of (black) ground wires so it's easy to do. To use a bent paper clip and insert one end in the green wire connector and bend it around and put it into a black wire connector. If it powers up, it is most likely a problem with the female connector block on the MB or the problem is on the MB itself.

The most cost effective solution then is to either replace the MB or the entire PC. They're very inexpensive these days.

Hey Vic, I didn't know that you knew something about the insides of a rig man, this is great.

Bro, I'm a PC network tech. I better know something. :-D

Well, I bought a brand new Compaq. The unplug suggestion did not work. I actually did replace the power supply and that did not work. There is a little green light that is illuminated on the mobo when you do plug it in.
