I will be moving for sure up north early in 2009.

I can't bring my whole PC up there as the monitor will break during handling also the tower components are too fragile to bring on a plane.

The only thing i can think of is taking the components apart and packing them up really well and bringing them on my carry on and when i get to my new home build a base and mount the components on it.

That or i won't have a PC for 2 years,lol

What do you think?

The only thing I can think of that's really fragile are harddrives and CDRoms.
Leave the MB and PS in place. Remove the boards, bubble wrap them and lay them in the tower with packing material all around. Stuff the tower full so nothing can move easily. Then pack the tower.
Take the drives as carry on wrapped in bubble wrap.

I mount My Hard Drives in My tower using Rubber Bands.
A rubber band attached to each screw on the HD, so the HD is
suspended in mid air, so to speak. You have to use a larger Bay (5 1/2")
for this to work.
It offers some shock protection.

I just found out I can't bring the Tower itself just the components. So i need to build a base when i am up north to place the components on, is that dangerous to have everything exposed?

As long as it's out of the way you're ok.
Do you drink coffee or soda while surfing?

I'd cover it with something though even if it's a cardboard box.

Don't forget the switches.

I ALWAYS have a drink while surfing, lol

What would be the best thing to set the Mother Board on? I was thinking that maybe i could cut the metal plate that the MB sits on in the Tower housing with the brass pins and set that on a wooden shelf type object.

How difficult would it be to get a case where you're going?
Anything will work in the interim as long as you're careful.

VERY difficult, lol

Everything is incredibly hard to get and expensive since it must be flown in.

You'll be ok. Set up as you proposed and I'm sure there will be something in your travels that you'll see that will suit your needs. I'm assuming that since you're willing to set up a computer in this manner that you're a fairly resourceful fellow.

Have you considered a used laptop?

Actually John, there is no rule stating everything must be mounted in a case or tower. Back in the day... (486, pre-Pentium), my cousin had all his components out on a table, with the motherboard on top of an upside down cardboard box, you know, the ones that six packs of soda and beer come packaged in. He had a hole just slightly smaller than the M/B cut out of the bottom (now the top) of the box for air circulation. :-D

Heh, sounds good, i just need to get a video card that has a TV out jack since i won't have a monitor and I'll be all set, lol

Mmmm... good luck going through inspections. :-?

You think a bunch of PC components will be a problem?

John,

Before I became unemployed for over 25+ years my profession was and still is "Retail software/hardware Business Analyst" and I can tell you that I've shipped over 1000's and 1000's of desktops/towers and laptops nation wide and pretty much nothing has happened to the internal components nor it's software.

You need to make sure your computer is packed properly with tons of packaging and you can re-seat any loose pieces upon your arrival. Please do label your shipment with "FRAGILE" and 'THIS SIDE UP" stickers. And oh yeah, very important... do insure it. The shipment insurance is very minimal, just a few dollars.

Hey, if anything happens to it durring shipment, the freight company is liable for replacement.

Good luck,

Best regards and may your computer arrive safely... :D
