Peace on Earth? Christmas wreath sparks anger

DENVER, Colorado (AP) -- A homeowners' association in southwestern Colorado has threatened to fine a resident $25 a day until she removes a Christmas wreath with a peace sign that some say is an anti-Iraq war protest or a symbol of Satan.

Some residents who have complained have children serving in Iraq, said Bob Kearns, president of the Loma Linda Homeowners Association in Pagosa Springs.

He said some residents believed the wreath was a symbol of Satan. Three or four residents complained, he said.

"Somebody could put up signs that say drop bombs on Iraq. If you let one go up you have to let them all go up," he said in a telephone interview Sunday.

Lisa Jensen said she wasn't thinking of the war when she hung the wreath. She said, "Peace is way bigger than not being at war. This is a spiritual thing."

Jensen, a past association president, calculates the fines will cost her about $1,000, and doubts they will be able to make her pay. But she said she's not going to take it down until after Christmas.

"Now that it has come to this I feel I can't get bullied," she said. "What if they don't like my Santa Claus?"

The association in this 200-home subdivision 270 miles southwest of Denver has sent a letter to her saying that residents were offended by the sign and the board "will not allow signs, flags etc. that can be considered divisive."

The subdivision's rules say no signs, billboards or advertising are permitted without the consent of the architectural control committee.

Kearns ordered the committee to require Jensen to remove the wreath, but members refused after concluding that it was merely a seasonal symbol that didn't say anything.

Kearns fired all five committee members.

honestly now. Come on. The attempts to remove some of these things is ridiculous. If it isn't hateful, or racist, or something that generally brings down the property value (an abandoned rusted out car on blocks) then it should be allowed. a manger scene, a cross, an american flag, a POW flag, a Star of David, a Peace sign.

Honestly, what is wrong with some people.

That is by far one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard...really, someone should set up a shop called "Lives Sold Here--Cheap!" so that these people who are so offended over a friggin' peace sign have something to do.

Yeah it's like they were just sitting around saying who can we bring down' around here. Oh' I know I saw a Christmas wreath' on the way to work' with a peace symbol in it for crying out loud'. This lady is completely out of order. Imagine that peace associated with a Christmas wreath. Lets fine this lady to the max. And run her out of town if we have to. Or give her some jail time

Can't take any chances on offending anybody.

This is a society that stands for nothing for the sake of everyone.

Actually, from what I see this society stands for anything as long as it isn't remotely religious.

Yeah and this country was built on Christian principles.

From WLBZ:

Peace Sign Christmas Wreath Can Stay

A Colorado woman can display her Christmas wreath shaped like a peace sign after all. The homeowners' association in the Pagosa Springs subdivision where Lisa Jensen lives has withdrawn its threat to fine her $25 a day unless she removed the wreath.

Several residents had complained, saying the wreath was either an anti-war protest or a sign of the devil. The homeowners' association ordered Jensen to remove the wreath from her house on the grounds that it doesn't allow flags or signs that are considered divisive.

Jensen tells The AP she got a letter from the board last night that called the incident a "misunderstanding."

Before the order was rescinded, Jensen said she received hundreds of calls of support and offers to help her pay the $1000 fine that would have been due if she kept the wreath up until after Christmas.

The problem was not religion, but whether she was making a statement about the war. So it was political opposition.

Interesting to see what is happening here in the UK is also affecting people across 'the pond'. What is it with this massive fear of offending people?

I find it interesting that everyone is afraid of offending anyone else--except Christians. We seem to be a non-issue to the world in that what we want or feel doesn't matter. "We can offend the Christians because they won't pick up guns and shoot us like these other people will." They go out of their way to appease the world at the expense of morality and the truth.
