Picture posting etiquette: I have a problem...

We as Christians should be concerned about "hotlinking" pics from others sites. Whether you realize it or not, it is stealing bandwidth from their webhosting companies.

I have posted several times the link to ImageShack. http://www.imageshack.us I suggest we copy pics to our PC's and upload and link from there. Thay are in the bandwidth business and the beautiful thing is; they ask for no exchange of money whatsoever.

I have visited secular sites who use their services exclusively. If THEY can do it, we SHOULD.

Vic:

Do you mean hotlinking avatars or the like? e.g. one uses for an avatar something they find on another web site.

If there are personal pictures or avatars, one can simply upload them to yahoo. Anyone who has a yahoo email (and who doesn't these days? :-D ) automatically has a web site, whether they know it or not. One can activate their web site and upload their pics that way. That's what I do.

Are you talking about geocities? They used to not allow hotlinking. I know that when I would try it, it wouldn't show my picture on the website...instead it would say something like "Remote linking not allowed". Something like that......

Nikki:

Yes, I am referring to geocities.com. I never was aware they did that, and I do not understand how they enforce that if it's your web site. If you exceed to much bandwidth, it just won't work until a later time.

To prove my point you can click on my avatar I use on other Christian forums here:

Never had a problem. You can also read my alternate, kooky web site that no one knows about. I just put that there for fun--- it's not on any search engine, so I do not get much traffic.

My "real" site is http://www.eternalthroneofdavid.com

I have a "few others" just to toy around with, and I studied a little deeper in HTML lately, so I may clean them all up in the near future.

Hi all. This is not my site, so I do not have the authority to make this mandatory. I am only suggesting one uses their conscience before hotlinking from another site. Josie and myself have provided excellent alternatives. If you have your own site, blog ar server like I do, that's great too.

This shouldn't be a big deal for us. This is a rule on some sites I go to and there is no opposition whatsoever. Hey, if you've been convicted to not do this as I have, fine...if not just hope no webmaster traces their links back to us and we get a warning. Hey, it's happened here before to Evanman in End Times Forum.

Vic:

I know you are not making anything mandatory. I was just wondering what you were referring to. In addition, the way I mentioned is the way to go if one wants to upload many pictures.

You'd be surprised how many people do not realize they have the ability to upload free stuff on the web for all to see.

For that layman, I like to compare it this way---

Email is where ANYONE can upload to the email account, but only ONE can download (to read his mail).

A Web page is the inverse--- Only ONE (or select few) can upload, but ANYONE can download it to read it.

Then there's the yahoo briefcase where one keeps their personal files--- Only ONE can BOTH upload and download (same with pictures or other files if they are password protected).

The moral of the story is this--- when one gets a free email account, that's some space on someone's server and web space is no exception--- it's just how it's used and accessed. There is no difference. Mass storage is mass storage.

Some webmasers would disagree, especially if they are leasing webspace and bandwidth on a monthly basis and have to pay additional $$$ for going over their bandwidth limit. We have no way of knowing this when we hotlink from other sites. Therefore, we run the 'risk' of stealing their bandwidth when we link from their site.

Would you 'tap' into someone else's cable to get free cable service?
