Okay so here's a poll about Gothic style, which comes into various categories, some quite distinct. (Multiple answers are possible in the poll.)

There's Gothic architecture.

Gothic jewelry.

Gothic make up.

Gothic apparel.

(Thoughts? votes? similarities, differences, between the categories?)

I quite like Gothic art and jewelry but I have also have an issue with labels

I agree with Grazer. Labels separate us. They polarize us. They keep us from talking to one another. We need to do away with the labels and just deal with people.

Ty, guys. Seems to me like the term Gothic is very wide-ranging. Interesting that one term can cover many aspects.

This may be stereotyped, but the Goth style is associated with a general love of black. Black clothes, black interior design, black makeup etc.

There are psychological studies showing that people who are constantly surrounded by dark colours are more likely to slip into depression. So I suppose a sensitive type like me should probably avoid it. But I still find that look very striking. I think it suits girls especially, they look very pretty.

Real girls, that is. Not Marilyn Manson.

Hi Kaliani:

Ty for the comments. Re. black make up, there is an option in the poll; did you see it? maybe vote, too?

I think the term Gothic is a very wide one, really.

Ty :).

Actually it has at various times been quite customary for women to extend their mascara outwards beyond the edges of their eyes; this has not necessarily been called a Gothic look, but I guess it could be.

You mean the cat eye? Yes that's pretty too but I think of considerably heavier makeup when I see the word 'Gothic'. Like tons of eye shadow, black lipstick, long black hair worn loose and among white girls, very pale, untanned skin. A fetching combination overall, I think.

...and endless variations in between the classic cat eye, and 'full' Gothic, I guess...

I'll stop wearing black when they invent a darker colour lol

I kind of like Batman so I do like Gothem City.... Is that close enough?

Not a big fan of gothic anything. Nothing against it in and of itself. It just doesn't appeal to me. :)

Paul:

Ty for your votes; and I see that your responses are probably the most consistently appreciative of the various expressions of Gothic style, including for Gothic make up. Glad to know Thayanee is doing better Does she maybe use it in Gothic style? there has been a bit of discussion of the cats eye type of mascara. Because for some women, make up and tribal tattoo styles are part of a complementary effort.

Blessings.

Hi Farouk, thanks for the good wishes for Thayanee.
No she doesn't do the "goth look".In Thai culture, black is reserved solely for mourning and gangsters. No i'm not joking, loan sharks (a huge industry) and drug dealers etc actually wear black like the bad guys in so many b grade TV shows and movies here and elsewhere. Every time there's a big arrest on TV they are always in black,to the point the BIB (boys in brown / police) will do random check on young guys wearing black:lol
Thais also like bright and cheerful colours so black is not popular. Having said that, in major cities like BKK and Khorat, I have seen an increase in Goths and also Punk / J Punk fashion which is also dark. Also in general fashion among the 20-30somethings black is becoming a little more popular as western influence takes hold.
The cats eyes aren't that big over here because they already have the beautiful almond shaped eyes and pupil colour is usually very dark brown to black. (Thais actually love Thayanee'seyes because they are hazel)
They do have a thing for the Egyptian style of mascara at the moment like you see in Hieroglyphs, extending from the outer edge of the eye towards the side of the head.
Hope that answers your questions properly
God Bless

Paul:

Thanks for your substantial contribution to the thread! :)

Yes, the cats eye is a bit like the Egyptian style that you mention. I guess some ppl would very broadly compare it with Gothic, as well.

Also, seems like men also that play in rock bands use black mascara, though whether your favorite metal bands do, I don't know.

Blessings, and hope your wife makes progress.
