We have U3, which gives us secured applications and data right on a USB thumb drive. But, there are some issues and it's proprietary.
Now, we have Portable Apps, which will work on any portable storage device. Plus, it's free! :D

It's apps are free also. :D :D ... and there's plenty of them; Firefox, Thunderbird, Chrome, Open Office, Foxit, Portable Bible study tools, games, Gimp, Skype, uTorrent, Audacity, VLC player, lots of utilities, like a PortApps menu and for the Mac fans, Mac on a stick! LOL
(^ just a list of what I might use ^)
You can get the apps a la cart
http://portableapps.com/apps
or download the suite

Now you can have your apps and data with you, wherever you go, even right on your keychain. It's all open source and have I mentioned, it's free? :D
