She became a Christian in the early '50's and legalism was a bit rampant at the time. She grew to become a giant in the Lord, a speaker and an author, filled with the Holy Spirit and free in Christ!

Alabaster:

Well, from what you said about yourself, your ears also bear testimony to that same freedom!

Why would you want to punch holes in yourself????

"Which is the preferable ear piercing method, gun or needle?"

My Daughter says the "Gun" is better since it "Goes down quicker".

She's got a stud in her tongue (That gets food caught in it when she eats).

BUT HEY!!!! no reason not to do it if you really want to. But WHY????

Bob:

It's a question that can be asked, sure, but then even ppl in the Bible wore earrings.

Re. your daughter's tongue stud, they are very popular now, just as earrings were - and are still. The lady who served at my local Christian bookstore had a tongue ring, though it didn't occur to me to ask her why: I guess it's her choice....:)

I like your term "classy arrangement" because yes I would definitely consider the professional needle method as much more classy than the gun.

And yes, you sum up the sound of the gun right. It is not terrifying nor will it cause nightmares but it is not pleasant and although one knows it is coming it is a little startling if it is your first time with the gun but nothing major. The sound alone is not what should put one off from the gun.

But to answer your last question, my piercing days are over. I have no desire to ever get my ears pierced again and because of my experience with infections, I hope my daughter never wants to get her ears pierced. I will not encourage her in any way, but if a day comes where she says she wants them pierced and I cannot convince her otherwise, then I will seek a professional to do it with a needle.

A tongue ring sounds painful!!! My daughter is at a stage where she keeps biting her tongue when she eats. I haven`t done that since I was a child but when she does it, I remember it was painful to bite my tongue. She always cries when she does it so I can`t imagine the pain of piercing a tongue. I think that must be more painful than any other body part. Your daughter must be tough! Actually I don`t know if the needle method could be done on a tongue. Do you know Farouk? If they could use the needle I think it must be a huge, scary needle. I would not have the stomach to get my tongue pierced! Plus with all the infections I had with my ears, I don`t know what a person does if their tongue gets infected. That could be serious! I am glad your daughter has not had such problems.

Actually it's reckoned to be among the least painful of the piercings.

They do it with a needle (to see, I guess if you pulled up youtube and typed in the words tongue and piercing, you would see), and they put a longer barbell in, in the first instance. The tongue may swell a bit, but you go back after it's healed somewhat and have a shorter, less encumbering barbell put in at the parlor.

"I would not have the stomach to get my tongue pierced!"

Actually you'd not find it a bad experience at all to have a stud inserted, according to most ppl who have done it.

:) Hope this answers your question.

(PS: It's really nothing like your poor daughter biting her tongue.)

I wholeheartedly agree with your 'professionally' bit. But it would be the contention of some ppl that a proper piercing parlor rather than a mall kiosk where the employee with a gun may herself be a recent school-leaver with relatively little training, would actually be a more professional environment to have it done.

Maybe you were satisfied with having it done at a mall kiosk? which is just fine. But there is quite a variety of strong views out there, one way or another.
So you would rather yourself or an untrained family member do it than a person at a kiosk who does it for a living? School leaver or no school leaver, that is their job and they would have had at least some training.

For me, I don't plan on getting a piercing (more likely a tattoo) but I would assume a gun would be better. I'll just whip out my Spas-12.....:armed

How about the good ol' rusty nail? :D

Certain piercings are of a sexual purpose.

Well whatever some ppl's motives might be, for a whole range of things, I guess that ppl don't need to get into this aspect. Whatever. :chin

Certainly not on the public forums. Sexual piercings = locker rooms.

I was simply answering a question in the nicest possible way! :p

We really must be careful what we do with our bodies, because of what certain things may reveal to the world an alignment with particular mindsets and lifestyles.

My own youngest daughter also had such a piercing....it was to me a step down into depths I didn't want to think about. I held my tongue (no pun intended!) and she matured and stopped wearing her barbell stud in short order.

Such things could easily become recgrettable later in life, especially tattoos. That is why I'm holding off both for the time being.

Agreed. That is one of the reasons why I would not allow my boys to get a piercing if they wanted one. I have known TONS of males who took it out and regretted it later in life. Things that are permanent to the body (especially those that carry social stigma) should be avoided until an individual is old enough to make a mature, thought out decision.

Well actually the lady serving at my local Christian bookstore happened to have a tongue ring.

I guess it's not necessary to jump to conclusions always and maybe for some ppl it's more of an aesthetic thing of personal preference like other pierced jewelry, such as earrings, etc.

(If this makes any sense...?)

People do things without knowing the origins of them and can unwittingly compromise themselves spiritually by what these things represent. Christians need to be very careful what they allow themselves to align with and it behooves us to get the facts. We must not be ignorant.

Alabaster:

I strongly agree that we should ally ourselves with thinks which are inherently wrong or have only bad associations, not even neutral ones.

That being said, you may have mentioned that in the 50s there were some old fashioned folk around who linked earrings with women of questionable repute: this of course is so far fetched :), but it's a comment on the restricted mentality of people who liked to be critical then (with the honorable exception of your dear mom).

Over the years jewelry customs have developed but I'm certainly prepared to believe that for some young people (and the earnest Christian bookstore lady) it's more of a fashion thing, really; there are various placements for piercing these days (not that I'm recommending them or anything!)

I used to be in a good Bible based church where a number of the ladies would kind of...have very vague necklines, but they were Godly people. Maybe the way they dressed wasn't a good idea, but I wouldn't want to say that they were bad because of it.

Everyone is different and every circumstances are different, I guess.

(If any of this makes sense...)

Yes it makes good sense, but I do believe that these days we are being remiss if we do not uncover the basic reasons why certain customs exist. If a devout and sensitive believer knew the reason for a tongue piercing, for instance, I doubt very much she or he would choose it.

That isn't being legalistic--it is being spiritually discerning and careful about what it is we are identifying with.

PouringRain:

Do you really think that for young men it carries a social stigma to wear earrings? (All the boys who played ball in my street happened to wear them - in both ears.) I'm not saying young men should wear them. Just that it's very widespread. Maybe, just maybe in some ppl's areas it's more widespread that in others, though.

God bless.

PS: I hasten to add: you know what's best for your family. What works for you guys has nothing to do with other ppl's reasonings, and choices, so you guys need to do your own thing, whatever this may be as the years go by.
