This is something my high-school principal taught me.

The basic principle is that an effect can't be greater than its cause because something can't come from nothing. A dog can't read the newspaper. I can't jump off a building and fly away.

Material things are limited in time and space. My body is in this room and no where else. Spiritual things are higher than material things because they are not limited by time and space. My mind can be thinking about any other place than this room and any other time than right now.

Because spirit is higher than matter, a material cause cannot have a spiritual effect. My ability to think of spiritual concepts, like justice or mercy, which have no material component, can't come from my body, which is purely material. So I must have a spiritual component of my being--which we call a soul. This soul could not come from my body--there's no DNA for soul, and material cause can't have spiritual effect. Thus there must be a higher spiritual cause that causes my soul to be.

Proof of a soul = Proof of a higher being

.

I always thought ....

Mind is not = soul

justice or mercy = moral concepts

Soul = emotions

..... all of which are directed and controlled by the Holy Spirit.

Just wondering, does God's Word agree with you old school teacher?
Heb.11

[1] Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
[2] For by it the elders obtained a good report.
[3] Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.

Old Job stat that God hung the world on nothing! and David? He to says that God SPAKE and it was done!

Oh! and god said that when He Breathed the BREATH of life into man, [HE BECAME A LIVING SOUL].

You say... ' Proof of a soul = Proof of a higher being'[/QUOTE]

Now that I agree with! Man did not creat himself!

If we have spirits/souls, why do we need brains? I mean, think about it this way: if our brain is damaged our soul/consciousness is damaged. If we take drugs, our consciousness is altered. Emotions, by all measures, seem to merely be physical states. If I take an anti-depressant, the disposition of my soul is changed. How is that possible if spirits/souls are above the material?

I'm not one who uses spirit and soul as interchangeably as some do and I'm convinced from the Bible's perspective that the spirit is indeed immaterial.

Gendou Ikari: "If our brain is damaged our soul/consciousness is damaged. If we take drugs, our consciousness is altered."

What makes you say our soul is damaged if we are brain-damaged?

Gendou Ikari: "Emotions, by all measures, seem to merely be physical states."

I suppose that's arguable, but what do emotions have to do with souls?

Gendou Ikari: "If I take an anti-depressant, the disposition of my soul is changed."

I think you mean your spirit is changed. Souls and spirit are not the same thing. I think the person above me, Vic C., switched the two words on accident. Spirit is sort of liveliness. Dogs can have a happy spirit or a grumpy spirit. But they don't have souls. Souls are exclusive to humans. Souls are spiritual. Anti-depressants do not affect your soul; they affect your spirit. You see?

Well I thought that was a good piece/analogy there Christopher. I enjoyed it. :thumbsup

You don't have a soul. You are a soul.

"And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life: and man became a living soul" (Gen. 2:7).

The spirit is what lives on.

pysche is the greek word for mind and the word psuche is the greek word for soul.

the soul contains the personality, not the mind.

i deleted the double post.

Now if we can just put these together we can come up with a solid definition..lol. Great post to both!

However, jason wins out on completeness. Walter wins for awesomeness. Its funny, I have posed this question to many. And I have yet to have someone come back with that response walter. You been listening to Ravi?

Man is indeed a soul, which is used interchangeably with heart in the Bible. He has a spirit, which is used interchangeably with mind in the Bible. And he lives in a body, which is used interchangeably with flesh in the Bible.

I believe that the soul lives on as well as the spirit. We will be given new bodies.

But on topic, it is indeed a great analogy, and it helps to get one to thinking more.

1 Thessalonians 5:23 "Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit(pneuma) and soul(psychē) and body(sōma) be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ."

And for you Bible students out there. Each of the three words all have the definite article attached to them indicating that they are seperate and distinct from one another.

the soul contains the personality, not the mind.

Eze 36:26-27 "And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules."

I believe that the spirit/mind is what controls a person. Soul/heart is who the person is (personality), spirit/mind is the channel through which the actions flow to the body/flesh.

It is good to know who we really are!
