Here's something I've always wondered. For those who of us who accept the Trinity and that all 3 Persons in 1 God - again, 1 God - have always been spoken of throughout the Bible, we know that the Holy Spirit has been active since the beginning. Even if someone doesn't believe in the Trinity, but accepts that the Holy Spirit had been present in the OT, this doesn't change my question.
So, throughout the Old Testament, we have prophets such as Isaiah and Jeremiah who were given specific messages by God to profess to kings and nations. When their land was stricken with calamity, He spoke through His prophets to send a clear message to the nation of Israel when they had strayed from Him.
Then Jesus says that the apostles will receive the Holy Spirit, speaking to Pentecost, and indeed they do. So was not the Holy Spirit at work throughout time? Why would they receive the Holy Spirit on Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit has always been at work?
So then after Pentecost, the gift of prophesy is ramped up. Romans 12 says that some have the gift of prophecy and 1 Corinthians 12 & 14 speaks to a more general gift of prophesy among believers. Whether you believe that prophesy is a gift given to some Christians or all believers, there does seem to be an increase in the number of people with this gift. Personally, I see a difference between Prophets such as Isaiah and Jeremiah who were given specific messages to tell and prophesy found generally in the New Testament.
Why did Jesus say the apostles would be receiving the Holy Spirit at Pentecost when He had always existed, and why does prophecy seem to be given to the chosen few in the OT and more widespread in the New Testament.
