Bible Study Proverbs 1:7 AMP

The reverent and worshipful
fear of the Lord is the
beginning and the principal
and choice part of Knowledge
[its starting point and its
essence]; but fools despise
skillful and godly Wisdom,
instruction, and discipline.

People who fear God can use their knowledge both to glorify God and enjoy Him.
To be reverent is to be deeply respectful towards God.

I think enjoying God for who He is will delight my soul. The more I read the Bible, the more I will learn how God's nature is.

What is everyone's take on this verse?

This is so like much of Scripture in that it's calling a spoon a spoon.

Fools (those who do not seek truth) will despise Scripture, while those who love our Lord respect His knowledge and the Truth.

I think the amplified version botched the paraphrase.

Pro 1:7 - The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

I would paraphrase:

Fear of The Lord is but the first step. Even fools can fear The Lord. In addition, wisdom and instruction are needed to aquire knowledge.
