Bible Study Psalm 23: Seventeen Precious Promises

A Psalm of David.

{1} The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
{2} He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
{3} He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
{4} Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
{5} Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
{6} Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

1) The Lord is my Shepherd = That's Relationship!

2) I shall not want = That's Supply!

3) He maketh me to lie down in green pastures = That's Rest!

4) He leadeth me beside the still waters = That's Refreshment!

5) He restoreth my soul = That's Healing!

6) He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness = That's Guidance!

7) For His name sake = That's Purpose!

8 ) Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death = That's Testing!

9) I will fear no evil = That's Protection!

10) For Thou art with me = That's Faithfulness!

11) Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort me = That's Comfort!

12) Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies = That's Hope!

13) Thou anointest my head with oil = That's Consecration!

14) My cup runneth over = That's Abundance!

15) Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life = That's Blessing!

16) And I will dwell in the house of the Lord = That's Security!

17) Forever = That's Eternity!

Psalm 23–Seventeen Precious Promises

When i was a kid i couldn't understand why if the Lord was the good shepherd we shall not want Him...

And now that you are no longer a kid? :)

I always thought it meant not to want of earthly treasures. I don't know why really, but the 23d Psalm always goes thru my head while riding my Harley.

I will remember that climbing the hills in the desert on my polaris quad... yup i wonder why???

When i was young Psalm 23 was always to be read at a funeral. Thankfully i only went to one funeral when i was young. Psalm 23 was about the only Psalm i could remember and i could recite the Lord's Prayer too. I had real basic beginnings, i'm glad that i can understand Psalm 23 fully now. It is great to have that understanding, a result of God's Goodness to Prayer.

{1} The LORD is my shepherd
Not everyone can make that claim; in point of fact : not even every Christian can make that claim.

The reason is : the Lord's sheep all have eternal life and are in zero danger of eternal suffering.

†. John 5:24 . . I assure you, those who listen to my message, and believe in God who sent me, have eternal life. They will never be condemned for their sins, but they have already passed from death into life.

†. John 10:27-28 . . My sheep recognize my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish.

According to God's testimony as an expert witness in all matters pertaining to His own son; people passing themselves off as the Lord's sheep while not possessing eternal life, are actually quite christless.

†. 1John 5:9-12 . .We accept human testimony; but God's testimony carries more weight because it's the testimony of God, which He has given about His son. . . And this is the testimony : God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His son. He who has The Son has this life; he who does not have this life, does not have God's son.

So I would not recommend reading Psalm 23 at funerals unless there was reason to believe the deceased obtained eternal life prior to crossing over to the other side. Otherwise the service will be a fraud.

I know of the Protestant pastor who was asked by Audie Murphy's widow Pamela to speak at her husband's funeral. Audie Murphy, as you may already know, was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason and a Shriner; but he wasn't a Christian.

In amazement, the pastor asked Mrs. Murphy why she chose a Christian to speak at her husband's funeral. Though Audie himself wasn't a Christian, his widow was; and she explained that the Hollywood crowd would be there the day of his funeral, and having hob-nobbed with them during her husband's acting career, she was fully aware that many of them rarely listened to something on the afterlife related to Jesus' crucifixion. Well . . that day they did, and were very annoyed too because they were expecting the usual sappy, feel-good kind of liberal syrup to which pampered celebrities are accustomed.

Some may feel that Hell and eternal suffering aren't appropriate topics at a funeral. But I think that, other than Xmas and Easter, you couldn't pick a better time to bring them up, especially since the Lord testified that the majority of the human race hasn't been making it to safety when they cross over to the other side. (cf. Mtt 7:13-14, Mtt 22:14, and Luke 13:22-24)

†. Ecc 7:2 . . It is better to go to a house of mourning than to go to a house of gaiety, for death is the destiny of every man; the living should take this seriously.

As I watched some of the splendor and pomp of President Gerald Ford's funeral back in January of 2007, I couldn't help but wonder if he was in a position to really appreciate it; as I suspect people in Hell would certainly no longer really care anymore whether they were given an unknown pauper's disposal in a City incinerator, or reverently placed in a grand tomb in the National Cemetery with world-wide television coverage. I'm not saying Mr. Ford went to Hell; I'm just saying that if he did; then of course a cute Psalm like #23 would have been inappropriate at his funeral service.

AKJVR:

This is a great study of the Psalm!

1) The Lord is my Shepherd = That's Relationship!

Jesus did say that He is my Shepherd!

Some things to ponder on:

How does Psalm 23 relate to Jesus and the New Testament?

And what is the number seventeen a symbol for in the KJV Bible?

About Jesus being a shepherd:

"I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine. As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep. And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd." (John 10:14-16)

"For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the shepherd and Bishop of your souls." (1 Peter 2:25)

"And when the chief shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away." (1 Peter 5:4)

This is a fantastic interpretion of every line, thank you so much for sharing - it has really spoken to me today :) God Bless!

You know, I was wondering about the Lord is my Shepherd I shall not want/lack and how it could be at all comparable with when he sent his disciples out WITHOUT SHOES purse, script etc and He asks them (when I sent you WITHOUT these things) lackest thou anything?

They answered "nothing"

Where someone else might say, well look...they without shoes purse etc. So we know they were sent without these as Jesus points this out, yet he specifically asks them "lackest thou anything"? And Im wondering if the true riches in Christ (because they obviously felt no lack/want) if it speaks to the godliness with contentment being great gain there? Or to the secret of being content in every situation by doing all things through Christ (our shepherd) where we shall not want? Because Paul speaks of his being "instructed" to be in need and be full in every place. And you can sorta catch that, "I sent you WITHOUT and then NOW I send you TAKE WITH YOU" type thing going on there. Almost as if its speaking to the same instruction Paul is speaking of.

Because on the one hand there is being without (things) but the question to them is if they lacked (inwardly so) and they answered was no, they felt no lack. Like theres a sorta paradox sitting there or something. Just as having nothing YET possessing all things, or poor YET making many rich

Ever notice that? I just wondered about that myself is all

Great post, good topic. God bless you

.
I pointed out in post #6, that the Lord is not everyone's shepherd; nor is he even every Christian's shepherd. He's the shepherd of only an exclusive family of Christians who are in the right-now possession of eternal life. The rest are not only without a shepherd; but also quite christless.

I'm going to deliberately misquote a portion of the first verse of Psalm 23 in order to bring something out. Watch for the revision.

"I am not in want"

No, it doesn't say that. In point of fact, that portion of Psalm 23 is future rather than present. In other words; it says I "shall not" want rather than saying I am not in want. Lots of Christ's sheep are currently in want all around the world; especially in places like India, China, Afghanistan, Mexico, et al.

The Lord's sheep can expect to be in want while they're down here on the planet. Very few of them in the past were impervious to want so why should today's sheep expect to have it any better? True enough; the man who penned Psalm 23 lived a life of pleasure and luxury. But he was the exception rather than the rule. The rest of us would do well to curb our enthusiasm.

†. Heb 11:37-38 . . They wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins, being destitute, afflicted, tormented— of whom the world was not worthy. They wandered in deserts and mountains, in dens and caves of the earth.
