Psalm 72 - The Kingdom of God Soon to be Established on Earth

Psalm 72
(KJV - with headings added)
A Psalm for Solomon

The King's Son
1 Give the king thy judgments, O God, and thy righteousness unto the king’s son.
2 He shall judge thy people with righteousness, and thy poor with judgment.
3 The mountains shall bring peace to the people, and the little hills, by righteousness.

The Blessings of His Reign
4 He shall judge the poor of the people, he shall save the children of the needy, and shall break in pieces the oppressor.
5 They shall fear thee as long as the sun and moon endure, throughout all generations.
6 He shall come down like rain upon the mown grass: as showers that water the earth.
7 In his days shall the righteous flourish; and abundance of peace so long as the moon endureth.

A World-Wide Kingdom
8 He shall have dominion also from sea to sea, and from the river unto the ends of the earth.
9 They that dwell in the wilderness shall bow before him; and his enemies shall lick the dust.

The Nations Pay Homage
10 The kings of Tarshish and of the isles shall bring presents: the kings of Sheba and Seba shall offer gifts.
11 Yea, all kings shall fall down before him: all nations shall serve him.
12 For he shall deliver the needy when he crieth; the poor also, and him that hath no helper.
13 He shall spare the poor and needy, and shall save the souls of the needy.
14 He shall redeem their soul from deceit and violence: and precious shall their blood be in his sight.
15 And he shall live, and to him shall be given of the gold of Sheba: prayer also shall be made for him continually; and daily shall he be praised.

The Earth Bountiful
16 There shall be an handful of corn in the earth upon the top of the mountains; the fruit thereof shall shake like Lebanon: and they of the city shall flourish like grass of the earth.
17 His name shall endure for ever: his name shall be continued as long as the sun: and men shall be blessed in him: all nations shall call him blessed.

The Whole World Filled with His Glory
18 Blessed be the LORD God, the God of Israel, who only doeth wondrous things.
19 And blessed be his glorious name for ever: and let the whole earth be filled with his glory; Amen, and Amen.
20 The prayers of David the son of Jesse are ended.

Psalm 72 is another clear evidence that the Scriptures teach that the Kingdom of God will be established upon the earth at the return of Jesus. This final public prayer of David, although addressed to Solomon, looks beyond his time to the greater son of David, Jesus Christ, who will return to establish his Kingdom on earth, replacing the present kingdoms of men Daniel 2:44. Luke records the words that Gabriel spoke to Mary concerning Jesus' future rule
Luke 1:32-33 (KJV): 32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: 33 And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.
Jesus will reign over the "house of Jacob" when he returns and "turns away ungodliness from Jacob" Romans 11:26.

The promises made to David concerning his son and David's throne are recorded in 2 Samuel 7:12-16. They state also that God would be his Father, and this is shown in its fulfillment in Luke 1:35, Jesus is the Son of God. This is the qualification for Jesus to be heir over God's dominion, God's kingdom, not only because he is God's Son by birth, but he revealed all the qualities of God's character, wisdom and love during his ministry, suffering and crucifixion. These qualities now coupled with all that he has received in his resurrection and exaltation are what is needed to fulfill Psalm 72 in the Kingdom of God, soon to be established upon the earth Genesis 1:26, Psalm 8:6, Isaiah 2:1-4, Daniel 2:35,44, Matthew 11:25-30, 21:37-38, 42-44, Acts 3:19-21.

Where does psalm 72 say Jesus will rule over the earth when He returns?

Hebrews 12:25-29 says he is reigning from heaven right now!

Greetings Iconoclast,
Where does psalm 72 say Jesus will rule over the earth when He returns?
The whole setting and details speaks about the future reign of Jesus upon the earth. I consider the details do not fit the present status of Jesus, the Son of God who is now seated at the right hand of God, in God the Father's Throne.
Revelation 3:21–22 (KJV): 21 To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne. 22 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

Matthew 19:28 (KJV): And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

Kind regards

I encountered this brief note when reading a magazine this morning:

"Psalm 72: What a magnificent and refreshing picture of Messiah’s glorious reign is unfolded in this Psalm. It surely equals all that ever could be desired by any nation. Its great value however, lies in the fact that it is a faithful prophetic outline of the character of the coming age."

Kingdom of God here on earth

God will not always be in the third heaven as when all things are finished here on earth after the return of Christ God will make new again this present heaven and earth then He will usher down the New Jerusalem (Spiritual Kingdom of God). God will then be with us as the tabernacle of God is with men and He will dwell with us and we with Him forever. For now the kingdom of God is within us as we are made kings and priest of God as we reign with Christ here on earth until the seventh trumpet sounds and then the nations (kingdoms) of this world become the nations (kingdoms) of God and of Christ and He will be our God and we His people forever.

The tabernacle of God within the New Jerusalem is not that which is made by hand as neither is the New Jerusalem. When we are given spiritual bodies (glorified bodies) then we will see all things of God that are spiritual for in our mortal bodies we can not even perceive what the New Jerusalem will look like just as we can not even know what Christ looks like, but know we will be just like Him in our glorified bodies.

Third Heaven - This is where God, Jesus and the holy angels dwell plus the very breath of just men dwell as when we die it is that breath that returns back to God. It is called The heaven of heavens, (Deuteronomy 10:14; 1 Kings 8:27; Psalms 115:16; 148:4). (1Kings 8:27) The heavens, even the highest heaven, cannot contain you. The third heaven is beyond the space and stars. Where no man has seen by telescope. This heaven is the dwelling-place of God (John 3:13).

Daniel 7:27 And the kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven, shall be given to the people of the saints of the most High, whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey him.

Luke 17:20 And when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation: 21 Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.

Rev 3:10 Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth. 11 Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown. 12 Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name. 13 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

Rev 5:10 10 And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth. (We are the Spiritual Kingdom of God on earth)

Rev 11: 15 And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever. (We are that Spiritual kingdom of God while here on earth as we reign with Him over the nations)

Rev 21:1 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. 2 And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.

My emphasis and the subject of this thread is the 1000 year reign of Jesus upon the earth. One of my favourite passages that speaks of this teaches of the return of Jesus to establish this Kingdom of God upon the earth:
Acts 3:19–21 (KJV): 19 Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord; 20 And he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you: 21 Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began.

This speaks of the times of refreshing and the times of restitution or restoration of all things. The times of refreshing appear to be an echo of the following and other passages:
Psalm 72:6 (KJV): He shall come down like rain upon the mown grass: as showers that water the earth.

I believe that God dwells in heaven, not the third heaven. This is another subject. The breath of just men expire when they breathe their last, and like other animals it contains air and this consists of Oxygen and Nitrogen. It does not dwell in the third heaven.
I also wrote a book on Revelations you can find in the End Times forum under the sub forum Revelation. You will have to scroll down to read all 21 chapters. The book is called The Unveiling. :study
Yes, you referenced this on a previous discussion, but I disagree with much of this and do not recommend this. I would recommend the 5 volume Eureka - An Exposition of the Apocalypse by John Thomas. Volume 1 was published in 1861, now usually published in five volumes. This is a thorough exposition advocating the Continuous Historic view. Another book that I recommend is The Apocalypse Epitomised by HP Mansfield 1977 now also published as The Book of Revelation in the Expositor series. This is to a great extent a summary of the Eureka book, with some additions and slight variations.

Kind regards

Just because one does not agree with others does not mean they are wrong. What I give comes straight from scripture, not a majority rule teaching, in how I understand what the word of God has already been taught through the Holy Spirit.

I believe the kingdom of God and the kingdom of heaven are the same according to these scriptures.

Luke 17:20 And when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation: 21 Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.

Mark and Luke used “kingdom of God” where Matthew used “kingdom of heaven” quite frequently. In the same parable, the authors used different words, indicating that the two are referring to the same thing.

Compare Matthew 11:11-12 with Luke 7:28; Matthew 13:11 with Mark 4:11 and Luke 8:10; Matthew 13:24 with Mark 4:26; Matthew 13:31 with Mark 4:30 and Luke 13:18; Matthew 13:33 with Luke 13:20; Matthew 18:3 with Mark 10:14 and Luke 18:16; and Matthew 22:2 with Luke 13:29.

In each of these instances, Matthew used the phrase “kingdom of heaven” while Mark and/or Luke used “kingdom of God.” Clearly, the two phrases are interchangeable because they refer to the same thing.

There are three heavens:
First heaven - The firmament, Earths Atmosphere -which is the immediate sky, where the “fowls of the heaven” (Genesis 2:19; 7:3,23; Psalms 8:8, etc.), “the eagles of heaven” (Lamentations 4:19), it is our atmosphere that surrounds the earth.

Second Heaven - Outer Space, the starry heavens (Deuteronomy 17:3; Jeremiah 8:2; Matthew 24:29).
The second heaven is the starry heavens, where our atmosphere ends. It is the heavens in which the sun, moon, and stars are fixed in orbit.

Third Heaven - This is where God, Jesus and the holy angels dwell plus the very breath of just men dwell as when we die it is that breath that returns back to God. It is called “The heaven of heavens,” (Deuteronomy 10:14; 1 Kings 8:27; Psalms 115:16; 148:4). (1Kings 8:27) - “The heavens, even the highest heaven, cannot contain you. The third heaven is beyond the space and stars. Where no man has seen by telescope. This heaven is the dwelling-place of God (John
3:13).

A 1000 years in Rev 20 as per my understanding is not literal years, but only symbolic of a certain period of time as nowhere else in scripture other than Rev 20 does it mention a literal 1000 year reign of Christ here on earth, but symbolic as in Deuteronomy 7:9; 1Chronicles 16:15; Psalms 50:10; 90:4; 105:8 Ecc 6:6; 7:28; Daniel 5:1; 2Peter 3:8.

Greetings again for_his_glory,
Just because one does not agree with others does not mean they are wrong. What I give comes straight from scripture, not a majority rule teaching, in how I understand what the word of God has already been taught through the Holy Spirit.
What you have claimed is either right or wrong. There will either be the 1000 year reign of Jesus upon the earth or there will not. Your claim to take your view straight from the Scripture and from the Holy Spirit is also very questionable as many who claim Holy Spirit guidance believe in the Millennium and many believe in the restoration of the Jews to the Promised Land and their participation in the Kingdom of God as the first dominion. I suggest that despite your claims and exposition that this is what the Bible clearly teaches.
I believe the kingdom of God and the kingdom of heaven are the same according to these scriptures.
Yes, but the Kingdom of Heaven is NOT the Kingdom of God IN Heaven, but the Kingdom OF Heaven, that is OF GOD, having God as its source and will be upon the earth for the 1000 years. This Kingdom will replace the present Kingdoms of men, and will fill the earth.
Daniel 2:35,44 (KJV): 35 Then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold, broken to pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshingfloors; and the wind carried them away, that no place was found for them: and the stone that smote the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth. 44 And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.

Psalm 72:8 (KJV): He shall have dominion also from sea to sea, and from the river unto the ends of the earth.

There are three heavens
I disagree and this is not the subject of this thread.

Kind regards
Trevor

We are all free to give our understandings, even if we disagree with each other. The kingdom of God is a broad topic that covers many different topics in one, plus much scripture for the full context of this subject so I will bow out of this thread as we will never agree.

God bless :)

What a beautiful reminder of the hope we have in Christ’s return and the establishment of His Kingdom on earth. Psalm 72 truly paints a picture of justice, peace, and righteousness that only the King of kings can bring. Thank you for this powerful reflection, Trevor. Amen and amen—may the whole earth be filled with His glory!
