2 Peter 3:8 could be used but not a great support

that teaches nothing about purgatory which is a holding place for those who need to be purified before going to heaven... which is not Bible we are justified by faith by grace and by his Blood justified means to be made righteous --just as if we never sinned :readbiblei would like to read some good thoughts on this.. maybe the history of this teaching which takes away the finished work of the Cross :amen

yeah...i don't think its in Scripture. I think its one of the --big-- differences between RCC vs most Protestant denominations. i think there is some evidence that some early Christian groups prayed for the dead...maybe its based on tradition?

It from judaism. The teaching ,and the use of the mourners kaddish is a place to start. Very old and the pharisees said the prayers for a Rabbi only.later on it was for the use of any dead jew.light of the candle ,and length of prayer daily are nearly identical. In judaism ,sheol is seen a purgatory. You will find that in old teachings as well.sheol has layers of punishment. Only the lowest of the low remain in sheol, all others rise up to fan eden.

The things I learned when my grandparents passed.

i had read some of this today wife was at a yard sale i was looking stuff up and reading on this . i had some knowledge of this but it was very limited .he is a good guy and i do believe he is saved.. he so sold out on working for salvation .but yet he emphasis on saved by grace i do find what you posted very interesting

I grew up in the RCC and was shocked when I later learned that other Christian sects do not teach purgatory. I no longer believe in it.

2Maccabees 12: 46
Thus he made atonement for the dead that they might be freed from this sin.

Hey jaybird, would you mind double checking the reference you supplied?
It seems to be a typo or something.
thanks

While I do not believe in Purgatory, this did come to mind.
Mat 5:25 Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison.
Mat 5:26 Truly, I say to you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny.

Luk 12:58 As you go with your accuser before the magistrate, make an effort to settle with him on the way, lest he drag you to the judge, and the judge hand you over to the officer, and the officer put you in prison.
Luk 12:59 I tell you, you will never get out until you have paid the very last penny.”

It would seem feasible that The Lord had Eternal punishment in mind, but I can imagine that some might bend this to suit themselves and make a few bucks on the side.

macabees is historical not inspired..

the groups that accept the book believe it to be inspired, it was part of scripture when the LXX was written, it was never voted out by Jews until 100 years after Jesus, not voted out by a Christian group until 1500 years after the ascension. council of Jemnia, the Jewish group, was a pharisee lead council.

purgatory is for purifying the soul Jesus said Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.. if by some chance we are not purified when our time comes i will assure you we will not make it to heaven purgatory is type abode the person is held there till purified . you can hold a mass for the person and pray them out. along with you can pay the priest and he will pray you out .
