Which is smarter...

cats or dogs?

;)

I've always thought dogs. I love dogs and only tolerate cats--barely. However, is the average cat too dumb to learn like a dog, or is it smart enough to just ignore its owner--knowing that eventually they will give up trying to train them? :D

Well, I would like to offer this from my own experience, have you ever watched a cat watching you? It is a great past time for most cats... and what might surprise some of you is the reason they do it. Because they have what is called abstract intelligence. :eyebrow

Basically, they imitate behaviors they see people do, and they do this without training. :yes

My cat Idgee would watch me pull open a cupboard door, and later put her paw under the cupboard edge and pull it open herself, gaining a nice hidding spot. Also, this bright animal learned to push my faucet handle until cool water dripped out for her to lap up. I started throwing marbles down the hall to distract her while i studied, and she began to fetch them and would jump up on my desk with one in her mouth and then plop it onto the desk for me to throw again. :thumb

This abstract intelligence is considered a higher form of intelligence since it involves interpretation and redefinition according to animal psychologists. The other animals that demonstrate this are horses, apes, and dolphins.

Also, I have had quite a number of cats over my lifetime, and I have seen my cats train themselves to: use a toilet, eat with thier paws, open cupboards and screen doors, and jump on a moving skateboard for a ride.

Now, I do not for a minute think that dogs are inferior, I love dogs too... they can be so devoted to an owner that they may make a Christian's devotion toward God look weak. Dogs serve humanity by helping rescue teams save people, they can be trained to sniff out drugs and explosives, and we probably have all seen at least one dog lead the blind.

But one of you may say, cats cannot be trained at all. Well, maybe not to do the things that are genetically dog traits, like sitting, begging, or the like, but cats are trainable... Watch these you-tube videos and see for your self.

Of course we cannot COMMAND a cat to perform, they have to be taught to do these tricks as part of their natural sense of play...

Cool huh? So I ask again... are dogs smarter or cats?
:shades

i'm still a dog man, but that info was interesting... :study
