Bible Study Questions about the 12 patriarchs?

Reading in the NT came across these people

Who were they?
What was there purpose?
Are they mentioned anywhere else in the bible?

I googled them but I'm getting a lot of weird texts & so called "sacred writings" I don't want to fill my head with the wrong information.

Thankies :D

ReesesPieces: Patriarchs is the name given to various Old Testament saints of Israel, such as Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses and David, who for the most part served God faithfully and were examples to follow. Hebrews 11 has a good list of Old Testament saints whose faith God honored; it also stresses that we have New Testament revelation which they did not.

(Gen_49:8-12) Judah.
(Gen_49:13-18) Zebulun, Issachar, Dan.

You are right; these are patriarchs in the sense of the 12 tribes of Israel.

The 12 patriarchs are - literally - the 12 sons of Jacob (Israel) who went on to become the heads of the 12 tribes of Israel. They are:

Dan, Reuben, Gad, *Joseph (Manasseh, Ephraim), Judah, Asher, Simeon, Benjamin, Issachar, Zebulun, Naphtali. Levi was one of Jacob's sons but his tribe was not apportioned any land. Joseph did not receive a portion of the land but it was divided between his two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh.

The land of Canaan (the promised land) was divided among these tribes: Simeon, Reuben, Benjamin, Judah, Dan, Ephraim, Gad, Manasseh, Issachar, Zebulun, Asher, Naphtali.

The "12" patriarchs will refer to the sons of Jacob/Israel. While they were all Jacob/Israel's sons, they had different mothers. Go ahead and read Genesis. Patriarchs means "Fathers", as in a patriarchal society as opposed to a matriarchal society, i.e "Mothers".:twocents

Old Jacob "got busy" with Leah, Bilhah, Zilpah, and Rachel, the mothers of the Patriarchs. :o

Genesis 30 covers them.
