NUMBERS 21

4 From Mount Hor they set out by the way to the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom. And the people became impatient on the way. 5 And the people spoke against God and against Moses, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we loathe this worthless food.” 6 Then the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people, so that many people of Israel died. 7 And the people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord and against you. Pray to the Lord, that he take away the serpents from us.” So Moses prayed for the people. 8 And the Lord said to Moses, “Make a fiery serpent and set it on a pole, and everyone who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live.” 9 So Moses made a bronze[c] serpent and set it on a pole. And if a serpent bit anyone, he would look at the bronze serpent and live.

LOOK UPON ME

Another day, another reason to complain. This time it was the manna they were complaining about, note what they said, it is worthless food. Are we like that, do we complain about our pastor? This church doesn't feed us properly, the messages are worthless food. How often we criticise and complain against God's servants!

Moses must have been fed up. God certainly was because he sent fiery serpents among them. Note that only when these serpents began to bite and devour the people, if God hadn't have acted in this way the people would have gone on and on moaning and complaining. God needs to shake us up sometimes; remember he hears all your complaining. Believe me I have a gold medal in complaining! He hears it and doesn't like it.

True repentance moves God's heart. The Children of Israel admitted their sin, - there is an answer to complaining and it lies at the foot of the cross. Another way to stop complaining is to praise God; if only the children of Israel had concentrated on what God had done for them.

God provided an answer though, a fiery serpent. What a picture of Christ. What did Jesus say of himself: ‘If I be lifted up from the earth, I will draw all people unto myself.’ In Isaiah 45 we read these words: 22 Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else. Everyone who looks at Jesus will live. This is the great news for people who have been bitten by the serpent of sin.

Charles Spurgeon heard this verse preached on in 1853. He had his heart opened and he said that he looked to Christ and Christ alone for Salvation.

Have you looked to Jesus for Salvation?

God bless you

GALATIANS 5

17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

DUAL PERSONALITY

Ever wondered why you struggle to do something?

You want to wake up to pray at 6 am, but why is it that at 6 am you struggle to wake up? The reason can be summed up in this verse for when you get saved you receive a new heart, but your flesh remains. Your flesh has to be defeated and destroyed.
Someone said How do you defeat the flesh; you don't feed it.
If you want to wake up at 6 am, you need to sleep early. You don't need to watch TV the night before and fill your mind with rubbish.

We are in a daily war; it's going on 24/7. 365 days a year. It never stops. We see in Ephesians 6 that we have weapons. Why do we need weapons? if we aren't at war?

Paul in Romans 7 said that things he wanted to do, he didn't do and things he didn't want to he did. Surely if Paul struggled, we will also, but there is hope if we further look at Romans 7:

21 So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand. 22 For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being, 23 but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. 24 Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? 25 Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.

Look at Paul's answer in verse 25: the answer is the Lord Jesus Christ.

How do we kill the flesh? By feeding your spirit, by filling your mind with the word of God and prayer. It is also to keep looking at Christ; you remember in the first devotion, you looked at the bronze serpent. To keep on growing in the Lord and to defeat your flesh, you need to keep looking at Jesus. Keep Him and Calvary always before your eyes - Hebrews 12:1-4.

God bless you
