Redemption Song: Bob Marley's Journey From Rasta to Believer in Jesus Christ

February 6th marked what would have been the 67th birthday of Jamaican reggae legend Bob Marley, widely considered one of the greatest and most influential musicians of all time. Marley, who hailed from a lower class area of Kingston, the capital city of Jamaica, saw his rise to prominence in the 1970′s with a musical group known as The Wailers, with their new brand of Jamaican ska music and reggae. His album, Legend, released 3 years after his death, is still the greatest-selling reggae album of all time. In addition to turning reggae into a global music phenomenon, Marley was also the chief promoter of the Rastafarian religion worldwide. Redemption Song is a great song, but it is as much a political statement as it is a spiritual song.

I was under the impression that he was a part of the Coptic movement for a while, which was/is the basis of Rastafarian faith.

On the downside of all this, some of the so-called Coptics of Jamaica used religious expression as a legal loophole to "smuggle" and grow weed in the US.

I remember seeing a 60 minutes interview with Dan Rather, about the Coptic faith. This is an excerpt from the transcripts

Here is video from the same 60 minutes. It's worth watching.

The reason I remember all this is because in my former pre-saved, post hippie life, we used to sit around the table with a bong mimicking a "coptic prayer meeting".

Strange times, man. :D
