Photographs Reflections From the Heart

Faces of Christ #9

Painting When Jesus Died was an interesting challenge. The idea was to give a Spiritual perspective (if that would ever be possible) of when Jesus (flesh) died and Christ (Spirit) was given up. Here are some sketches I made to formulate some idea of what to paint.

I liked the idea of looking from the inside out. From inside the head. However, I also liked the idea of doubling the image like we do with both eyes, but without the mind puting them together to make a 3D impression.

The following photos shows the progress and method I use for painting.

I took photographs of people wearing a bedsheet. This gives me a guide on how to paint the garments.

The ground and background was greatly influenced by my recent (at the time) interest in Christian iconography.

Heart-Chalice
Many years ago I had a marvelous revelation and experience which has stayed with me since. It is the opening of my heart.

The experience still is hard for me to imagine. There are two distinct images that come to mind but they do not seem to meld into each other satisfactory in my mind. One image is the open heart with pure light (Uncreated Light) beaming out of it. The opening is sort of raw, yet pleasurable. The other image is of a chalice with bubbling Living Water which is always overflowing. It is very freshing, and at times it almost takes my breath away.

Here are some sketches of what my images are:

Had a dream which brought me to tears in my sleep.
It was symbolic (as most dreams are).
To me, the image of the dream was the Eye of Christ. The orange-yellow skin around the eye was covered in golden scars. They represented healed sins of those in Christ. From Christ's sacrifice He becomes exalted (Philippians 2:9-11). This is represented by the pure light shining out of His eye. The image also represents redemption for all those who repent their sins.

This painting is not yet finished. This is my first painting using a glazing technique (many thin layers to build up depth in a painting). Because I use oil in the glazing, it takes a long time for each layer to dry enough to paint over it again.

I shared this recently on another thread. It was drawn as a result of reading Mathew 11:28-30 "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."

My yoke, before reborn into Jesus Christ, was heavily ladened with all sorts of fears, leading me to greed, want, pride, lies, etc. I became the vehicle for some demon to ride and steer me into the dark. Always stumbling over my own wreckage (guilt, sabotage, etc). I was in the dark, full of tension, and felt drained from life energy. My light was almost extinguished.

Luke 17:6 He replied, "If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, 'Be uprooted and planted in the sea,' and it will obey you.

What does that mean "...it will obey you"?

These are photographs of a collage artwork. It is about addiction to pharmaceutical products such as caffeine, codeine, and other chemically induced feel goods. Taken in excess can cause internal organ damage - hence the jaundice skin colour.
The collage is mostly made from pharmaceutical packaging, except for eyelashes and pupil.

Top photo shows the pupil as reflective.
The second shot shows a slight curvature look when viewing from the side.
Bottom photo is overall photo of artwork.

My background is to do with drug and alcohol abuse, recovery, and then counselling the same for 20 years. So a part of my reflections from the heart is to do with that history.
