I broke up with my girlfriend who was expecting me to propose to her. I did it for extremely selfish reasons, primarily a fear of marriage and responsibility. This caused her a crisis, and she began dating an abusive man. After several months, I came to my senses and am now ready. Yet while she's eager to reconcile, too, she skeptical of me due to the break, and is afraid to leave the new man.
Please pray for my situation, for her (Skylar) and for me (Matthew), for forgiveness for what I did to her, and that we can safely and happily reconcile and finally marry. If God has other plans for us, I ask for prayers that we at least find good spouses and raise good families.

You probably need to earn her trust. Why not suggest to her that you be friends? Meet in a neutral place and ask her about her life caring for her, not what she can do for you. Be responsible as a friend. If I were her, that’s what I would want to see. Can you be her friend and serve her needs as a friend. Start there.

Btw, God won’t be acting in this until you do the right thing.

Thank you. We've been friends (best friends, in fact) in the time between the break-up and now, despite everything I did. I hope I'm doing the right thing now.

Although we would both love to just go back to where we were before, I know that it's not always wise. That's why I also ask for prayers that she is at least able to get out of the grasp of the abusive new man, and that we both are able to find good spouses, whomever they may be.

Your post also reminded me of part of a prayer by St. Augustine: "O God our Father, who exhorts us to pray, and who grants what we ask, if only, when we ask, we live a better life . . ." I pray that I can and am and will live a better life.
