Relationship with God

It's been a couple of years since I have felt close to God, the bible doesn't get me excited like it used to and my prayers are so repetitive. What do you do to stay close to God?

mariamaria:

It's good always never to fail to read the Word day by day, in a simple, prayerful way. Always good to get back to first principles: who God is, who the Lord Jesus is, who you are in His sight, how we get to heaven, etc. If we concentrate on these sorts of important questions, then the daily routine will not crowd out our Bible reading.

God bless your reading of His Word!

I think I have the same problem at present.
Prayer and Bible reading are the most important aspects, I think. These are the things Satan will try to hinder most--because communication with God is the most important thing about having a relationship with Him.

Remember that you can talk to God like a friend. I'd ask Him for help and guidance on this, and to help your prayer life get back to what it should be again. Maybe just before reading the Bible ask God to speak something to you through His word.

Also, perhaps reading a good Christian novel or book can help to motivate you. I know that always seems to help me, because it reminds me what it's like to be close to God again and opens me up to trying harder.

From what Ive seen, both in my own life and others around me,our walk with God is most often not going to be filled with excitement and warm fuzzy feelings.Life takes alot out of us,both spiritually and mentally, and most days were doing good just to stay the course.

What Ive learned through the years afterwards is that the picture-perfect walk with God is actually uncommon.Sure,we have our moments when things are falling together just right, and we really have the sense that were on the road that was planned for us.There are times when we definitely feel closer to Him,particularly when were able to act on an opportunity to help someone. But the times in between are most often quite ordinary and its my personal opinion that the more comfortable we are with that, the less we tend to feel like were missing out on some stellar event.

Just for clarity,Im not trying to downplay your situation or imply that youre worried about nothing.During the times that I have felt truly distant have usually been the times when I needed to do some introspection and figure out what needed to be cleaned up or addressed.

One thing to bear in mind also is that as we become more familiar with anything, the less likely we are to be all excited and charged up when dealing with it.Its the same with a car,a tv,computer, etc. When the new wears off,we just deal with it the best we can.

These days I feel closest to God when Im just simply doing the right thing. When Im able to set a good example for my stepdaughter, help a coworker with a problem or encourage my wife when shes feeling down.Simply living life the way God designed can draw us closer than a 5 hour prayer-a-thon.

Good luck with things,I hope you figure out your situation and are able to move forward.

MariaMaria, are you plugged into a good, Bible teaching local church? Sometimes if we feel like the only ship on the sea, we lose sight of what direction we're supposed to be headed, and what it is that God has planned for our lives. Real relationships with other believers can not only help keep us accountable in our relationship with and position in God, but brings encouragement into our daily walk that we will otherwise be lacking.
