The LOVE of money is the root of all evil.

For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. 1 Timothy 6:10

What else does the Bible say about money ,investing, spending saving etc. ???

God is actualy the source of all things including Evil..... I can find scripture to back that up if you like..... I should not have to though.

Surely you relise by now that with out God nothing happens at all to begin with..... Paul does warn us to stay away from the old wives tales however..

Grace and Peace to you

Scripture tells us that wherever our treasure is, there will our heart be also.

Of course treasure doesn't have to be counted in monetary terms.

The Greek Lexican offers "some of all types" as a definition to the word translated "all" in the KJV.

So, the NIV phrase is accurate in saying: For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.

The NASB translates it that way as well:

1 Timothy 6:10:
“For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.â€Â

This particular topics makes me think of a quote from C. S. Lewis’ book entitled Mere Christianity:

“According to Christian teachers, the essential vice, the utmost evil, is Pride. Unchastity, anger, greed, drunkenness, and all that, are mere fleabites in comparison: it was through Pride that the devil became the devil: Pride leads to every other vice: it is the complete anti-God state of mind.â€Â

Oh geez, that could take pages. I'd recommend looking up "Dave Ramsey" on the internet. He is a huge public speaker/financial advisor and he is a Christian so he quotes Bible verses along with his financial advice, from which he has had the extraordinary experience of being a millionaire, going completely broke, and then having to start all over again. I took a video class of his over the summer. It was outstanding.

So wanting to have lots of money is Good??

Ok I'll try to do a little exegesis here.

Here is my thesis: Wealth outside of God is vanity (Proverbs 23:4‑5, Ecclesiastes 5:10). Wealth can cause all kinds of greed and wicked deeds by those who treasure it above all in their heart. But God can bless you with wealth and prosperity as an accessory blessing for following him, as he did with Job and Solomon (Job 42:10-17; 2nd Chronicles 1:11-12). Read specifically what he said to Solomon.

Now for some more supportive scriptures. First of all, because of the greed issue, this is why Jesus said, "Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also" (Matthew 6:21). He elaborated before that saying, "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal" (Matthew 6:19-20).

Our true treasure is where our heart will lead us. Paul is a prime example of someone who sought after God first, knowing his inhereitance and treasure were in Heaven. "Not that I have already obtained it or have already become perfect, but I press on so that I may lay hold of that for which also I was laid hold of by Christ Jesus. Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. " (Philippians 3:12-14)

Paul sought after God, the goal mark, as if he were in a race for endurance and perseverance to win his prize in Christ Jesus.

This demonstrates obediance to the command, "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." (Matthew 6:33)

Now, there is also a prime example of someone who did the opposite all for the love of money. This is the story of the richman who came to Jesus:

17 Now as He was going out on the road, one came running, knelt before Him, and asked Him, “Good Teacher, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?â€Â
18 So Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God. 19 You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery,’ ‘Do not murder,’ ‘Do not steal,’ ‘Do not bear false witness,’ ‘Do not defraud,’ ‘Honor your father and your mother.’â€Â[a]
20 And he answered and said to Him, “Teacher, all these things I have kept from my youth.â€Â
21 Then Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “One thing you lack: Go your way, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow Me.â€Â
22 But he was sad at this word, and went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.

(Mark 10:17-22)

Because of his riches he rejected God. Truely money is the root of all kinds of evil, becuase it causes lust in man for the wealth of the world. God can bless you with material wealth but we must remember to "Seek first the kingdom of God" and THEN "all these things will be added unto you." And yet even this is not a promise of becoming rich but merely that we will lack nothing and a have all that we will ever need.

I'll leave you off with these verses:

"Each one must do just as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that always having all sufficiency in all things, you may have an abundance for every good deed." (2 Corinthians 9:7-8)

"Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have." (Hebrews 13:5)

This was the most well thought out reply I could imagine.

You spoke and quoted scripture every time about the heart and the reason.
Storing treasure is silly.
And treasure can give more temptation.

Being content with what you have is the biggy though.(WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO BE CONTENT WITH WHAT YOIU HAVE)???? Is this a free ticket to complacency and laziness of mind??

Pondering still here.

I try. I really do. :D

Well I've thought on this before and I think it is saying to be content with the current situation in one's life in what one has.

Now this does not mean quit your job and live off of what you have, because your job is also a possession to you also, in a manner of speaking. And I definately do not think it promotes laziness because the Bible commands us "Whatever you find your hand to do, do it with all your might" (Ecclesiastes 9:10) but I do think it means to not covet beyond what you are provided for the sake of material gain only (the love of money). Now if you are in material need you may seek to gain money to provide for the need, and this is what God promises us for those to seek after Him. If God gives you an abundance then perhaps you have more than you need and may consider giving ("God loves a cheerful giver") some of it to some one who is in need, though we should always find ways to give even if we are poor (as did the Woman with the two mites - Mark 12:41-44).

I think the command to be content with what you have is speaking against envy or covetousness for money, not the gaining of money to provide for one's self and perhaps have some abundance for personal uses and giving.

(me)Dont agree I can see how we could agree on not getting more when we can to give to those in need.

I'm not sure what your point is with this. Of course we can have head knowledge about how to go job searching, but still that doesn't mean you'll get a job. My point was that if you do have a material wealth then searching for more wealth for sake of the love of money is most certainly greed when you already have more than you need. I know very few people are in this position (being materially rich) but I thought I would cover it to be thorough.

It's so difficult to generalize because situations can be vastly different in each circumstance. But the heart of it all is that gain of money out of greed is wrong, but this doesn't mean that we can't use the opportunities or jobs that God has blessed us with to gain some money. If you read the Bible than you will see that wealth can be properly handled in a righteous manner.

Dont agree I can see how we could agree on not getting more when we can to give to those in need.

What don't you agree on?

(CAREY) I am not talking about getting a Job I am talking about starting our own businesses. We know jobs will never make us rich. Thye however can provide with planning the ability to start a business and still make ends meet while growing that business.

Oh, I think you misunderstood what I wrote, I said the Bible was speaking against greed but was not speaking against gaining of money to "provide for one's self and perhaps have some abundance for personal uses and giving".

But I believe giving of one's money whether poor, middle class, or rich is always a noble cause and the right thing to do.
