Is anyone else into this with their Android or iPhone? I read, learned, and thought about it for quite a while until I went ahead and rooted my Galaxy S3 about 3 months ago. Since then, it's sort of come to be an obsession of mine. I can't imagine owning a phone that's not rooted anymore. I made some rookie mistakes which ended up with me holding a brick in my hand, but I learned from it.

My family's contract with Sprint is up in March and I'm already thinking the phone I'll go with has got to have a good set of custom roms to choose from. That's like my first concern. I find it so cool to wipe a clean and start fresh with a new rom and a whole new look & feel. The new Android L is supposed to be introduced in October or November. Knowing Sprint, I wouldn't expect to see that operating system for another year, but I'm guessing it won't be long at all before Android L roms are pushed out for rooted users.

So, are there any other rooters or jailbreakers out there?

I run my computer as admin, but the phone is just too much hassle....... I really just use it for a phone, anyway.

I looked into dumping Windows for Linux on my laptop, but all that just seems daunting to me. I'm afraid I'd get too far in over my head only to find out too late that I made a big mistake. Jacking up a phone I can replace on eBay for $80 is less risky.

All the tinkering you probably see as a hassle is what I consider time we'll spent. It's just interesting as all get out to me to wipe and refresh with a new rom and basically a whole new phone! Yeah, I know that makes me a geek, but I love it. I listen to a lot of podcasts on Android technology on my commute to and from work. I'm all in! GEEEEEK!! :woot2

Not to worry. Do the research beforehand, take backups and you'll be fine.

Depending on what you use your computer for, Linux may or may not be suitable.

I really regret getting a Android phone, I hate it. Should have stayed with Windows or got an iPhone but I don't care for either MS or Apple either. I just find that the older I get, the less interested I am in tinkering with such things. I just want something that works and I don't see tinkering helping.

What frustrated you about it?

Android? I can't setup my work email address and I had significant difficulty setting up a personal email address. On my iPod, I had both setup on it in a couple of minutes. Not to mention how much Google is involved in it all. Every app of theirs I have checked gives permission to access everything, read text messages, etc. There is absolutely no privacy with Android.

Free, have you checked out "OWM for Outlook Web Email"? If you are on Outlook at work, this may be of interest to you. It worked easily and seamlessly for me. My current employer has extremely strict security measures that prevent it on their end, but it was terrific at my previous job.

As far as privacy, I don't think it's as bad as it looks. I think it's more a problem with the way Google explains permissions and why certain apps need them. Most of the time, the app just needs the access for the functionality of one of its features. I understand that Google collects information, but that's mass data over millions of users, and I'm willing to make that trade for the benefits I receive. They're not interested in what Mike from CFnet is doing.

Yes, Eora, I learned the hard brick way to make sure I'm flashing the U.S. version of the Sprint Galaxy S3 (d2spr) of any rom. Part of my learning process, but hopefully I'm past all that.
