So I did a few searches to see if anyone had posted about this topic before and it didn't look like it had come up in the past. So here's the background: Stanford has a research lab that has some projects that use distributed computing - that is, software anybody can run on their own PC - to perform scientific work for their labs. The project is called Folding@Home and basically they use all this computing power to run protein folding simulations that help determine causes and possible medicines for various diseases. Currently they are working on some pretty important research that may lead to the first attempts to find medications that can slow or stop Alzheimer's, for example.
Bottom line - it's basically what you could call a "good cause" to support in order to provide help to the needy and healing to the sick in a very high tech way. Further, they have a points system set up along with the ability to join teams to produce points for the computing time you donate to the project. Currently the highest rated Christ-centered team is Nerds for Jesus which is running in 237th place in the overall rankings Sadly, the highest rank anti-God team is The Godless Ones currently in 178th place.
I was just curious if anyone here had ever taken part in a distributed computing project, such as SETI or distributed.net and was interested in folding for something more important that searching for aliens or encryption breaking. It can help work in the medical field and help glorify Jesus' name by moving the team up in the ranks if more people can join up. The software runs on just about anything that's at least 500mhz, but obviously the newer and faster it is, the more points it will provide. They support all kinds of platforms; Windows, Linux, Macintosh, nvidia and ATI video cards, and even Playstation 3.
So anybody interested? It's unconventional for sure, but I figured I might pass along the info in case anybody wanted to join up. NFJ's team number is 31630. Think John 3:16 & 30 to remember the number. Or.. you could write it down or use copy & paste.
