Sabbath

I became a Christian five years ago and I would like comments on the sabbath.
A member of my church has left to go to another church as she is convinced that the sabbath is saturday
but I cannot find anything in the Bible to say that saturday is the sabbath.Everything is a long the lines of God worked for six days and rested on the seventh and Jesus taught in the synagog on the sabbath.
Where does God say that saturday is the sabbath. Some say that sunday is the first day of the week as this is the day that he rose, but he actually rose on saturday, we know this because one of Gods angels told mary early on sunday morning that he has risen.
In Romans 14:5 Paul says that a man may choose any day for the sabbath.
Any comments?

I go to church on saturdays. I don't believe God is going to condemn us for either, otherwise it would not be confusing. I think it's a non-essential issue. :)

Colossians 2:16 "There do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon Celebration, or a Sabbath day."

And also

Mark 2:27 "Then he (Jesus) said to them,'The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.'"

The day of Pentecost fell on a Sunday, and that was the day the Holy Spirit came upon the disciples and the church began. You can find an example of Christians meeting on Sunday in Acts 20:7, and also of Paul traveling so as to reach the Jerusalm by Pentecost (Sunday) in verse 16.

That being said, my church has never considered Sunday to be the Sabbath. You can find reaffirmations of the ten commandments in the New Testament, but you never find a direct command to keep the Sabbath. Because in truth, every day is the LORD's day whether we choose to recognize it or not. It isn't about not walking so many feet, not working, or following rituals (as the Pharisees thought), it's about doing God's work and worshiping Him. If a Christian believes he must have Saturday as the Sabbath day, then why not follow all of the Sabbath rituals?

Also, I'm not sure I follow your rationale for saying Christ rose on Saturday. Just because they found the tomb empty early in the morning doesn't preclude Christ from rising on Sunday before they arrived there.

Saturday was the sabbath DAY, but the sabbath day was just a shadow of the real sabbath.

Check out Hebrews 4.

Sunday is not any holier than Tuesday.
Saturday is not any holier than Wednesday.

Fridays are better than Mondays.

Amen, now it means we have to enter into the rest (Sabbath) on a daily basis where we have to trust God by believing His promises are real . We cannot trust AND work at the answer to our problems too. We either work at the answers or we "shabbat"(rest) and allow God to bring us the answers.

Heb 4:9 There remaineth therefore a sabbath rest for the people of God.
Heb 4:10 For he that is entered into his rest hath himself also rested from his works, as God did from his.
Heb 4:11 Let us therefore give diligence to enter into that rest, that no man fall after the same example of disobedience.

Oh and yes, Fridays are better than Mondays . :lol

I think it's a non-essential issue.
The Sabbath, being one of the 10 Commandments is absolutely essential, in my opinion. But the essentiality (I made up that word) is not the day you choose to rest, or to make a whole bunch of rules on what you can and can't do on your day of rest. The point is to set aside a time of rest. Whenever I feel drained, run-down, overloaded, stressed, etc. - its ususally because I haven't had a time where I can just sit and do nothing for an extended peiod of time.

A round of golf can be a Sabbath-like experience for me - especially if I can play by myself.

It's good to get some rest, but you aren't observing the 4th commandment unless you're resting on the seventh day and it lasts the entire day.

Also, your donkey can't work on that day either.

"If you are tired from carrying heavy burdens, come to me and I will give you rest." -Jesus

Jesus is our Sabbath now. We are not bound by Law. That said, unless we do rest from our labours as God did, and honour Him at least with one day's rest, we will eventually run aground. God will bless those who do as he did--rest and remember Him.

Those who refuse to honour some sort of Sabbath in their lives, whatever day of the week it is, find that once they decide (in their God-given freedom to choose) to honour God with one day of rest devoted to Him, they receive blessing, better financial health and real rest and peace in their lives.

It's all based on the Hebrew calendar. It can be confusing, but it's really not if you train yourself to think in terms of both their calendar and the one we use today. The main difference is what time of the day separates one day from the next. They use sundown, we use midnight. They didn't have names for the days of the week; they were numbered within their respective month.

Knowing that, the seventh day for them actually starts at sunset, our Friday, and and ended the following sunset. So technically, the Sabbath is part of our Friday and part of our Saturday. :lol Have fun with that...

Now, all the Bible indicates about the resurrection of Jesus is that it occurred sometime after sunset of the seventh day and before sunrise of the first day. Everything else is speculation. So He could have risen after sunset of our Saturday or any time in between then and our Sunday morning sunset. Any way you slice it, it was the first day of the week. :amen

Thanks for summing up my sentence from what you thought I said to what I actually meant. :D

I figured you didn't mean it was "not important". Just that what day it is observed is a non-essential issue. Agreed. :salute

If it were an non-essential issue, God would not have said, "My Sabbaths you shall observe, for it is a sign between Me and you throughout your generations; that you may know that I am the Lord that makes you holy." Ex 31:14. The sign of Sabbath observance distinguishes God's people from the heathen.

In other words, do not let anyone persuade you differently when you abstain from unclean food or for observing the Religious Festivals (outlined in Lev 23), or a New Moon (which is the beginning of the month in the eyes of God.... look on your calenders, you'll see that the New Moon falls in the middle of our Gregorian calender... the complete opposite what God commanded us!)

Pentecost always falls on Sunday. Since we are on the subject of Sunday, if you look closely at the gospels, Yeshua arose on Sunday...... the first day of the week. Look on your calenders. Since God specifically told us to observe the seventh day as the Sabbath, that would be Saturday.

Why would He need to? He's already told us 170 times to observe and perform His Commandments...138 times in the Old Testament and 32 times in the new! Since we wouldn't believe Him after 170 times, would 171 times make any difference? (Incidentally, we do find a direct command to observe the Sabbath, for Hebrews 4:9 says "There remains therefore a Sabbath of rest for the people of God...")
