Saying Grace

Why? Is it necessary for all prayer to be verbal or can one speak to God silently?

In fact, I'd say that depending on the motive it might be best to pray in silence. Isn't that what Jesus warns against when he tells us to close the door and pray alone rather than doing it on the street corners for all to hear? If praying out loud one is doing it for the benefit of being heard by others, it is probably a waste of time, isn't it?

When one prays for the group at table, one does it verbally as hearts join in. I think it is a great occasion for gratefulness to be expressed verbally, especially in public, as it shows the world our gratefulness and just whose we are. It makes an impact for Christ, whether we are ever made aware of it or not.

don't say grace - no-one eats at a table anymore - except at Christmas

Even if we eat off the floor, doesn't God deserve our gratefulness for His provision of our daily bread?

Barely eat as it is lol. When I remember, I give thanks in my normal prayer ...

What do the decibels have to do with it?

We do need to be thankful in our hearts, though.

Plus, if we have guests, it's good to be audible about it, too.

Loud and showy is something Jesus has something to say about.

I read an article somewhere yesterday about a woman who says a wordless grace to God by merely lifting her plate toward heaven in gratitude.

I love that...

Doing some quick Googling, there are at least 5 recorded places in the Bible that Jesus said grace:
Matthew 15:36
Matthew 26:27
Luke 22:17
Luke 22:19
John 6:23

However, the verses are not clear whether Jesus prayed aloud or not.

However, Acts 27:35 tells us Paul gave thanks aloud:
After he said this, he took some bread and gave thanks to God in front of them all. Then he broke it and began to eat.

Romans 11:36 suggests that we should be thankfull for all things that are provided through God - food is one of them. I am reminded of Matthew 6:25-34.

There may be other verses that deal more specifically with prayinlg aloud, but I'm not sure :shrug.

I think if one can do it without boasting, then it is great for everyone at the tableto join in your prayer and be thankfull as a group. In this way, saying grace is the same as saying any othe prayer. You can say it in your heart or aloud, but don't boast, and it must come from the heart.

The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. - James 5:16b

Don't understand the fuss about how we should pray - surely when we're moved to pray we should do so however we do it - God knows what's in our hearts ...

It isn't important that we be moved to thank God, but it is important that we do thank Him in all things---even at meals, for He, our great Jehovah Jireh, furnishes us with our daily bread.

Ephesians 5:20
And give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

sounds like ritual rather then prayer ...

It's from my understanding that daily prayer leads to being moved to pray more. It is a discipline and something that needs to be incorperated in our daily lives, not just "when we feel like it"

If I’m alone I pray silently, but when my daughter’s with me I pray out load. I guess it is a way of me teaching her how to pray and that we can pray about anything.
</O:p
We had our yearend function last week and Friday and I just bowed my head and thanked the Lord for the meal. I don’t think anybody at the table even noticed, as they were all in a party mood and were planning to get out-of-their-skulls drunk. Judging by the bills that was sent out on Monday morning it was Mission accomplished, comrades!! :salute . Good thing I left after the meal.:lol<O:p
