Archaic humans are just early H. sapiens. The article got it wrong. H. heidelbergensis is close to us, but survived long enough to overlap with actual H. sapiens like Neanderthals, Denisovans, and even anatomically modern humans. So we know they aren't the same species.

H. antecessor is an older species of human, and H. erectus still older.
