Security Systems

In our big city, and in my neighborhood, an increase in crime has prompted me to
seriously consider installing a home security system.

Do any of you have them, and are you pleased with what you get for the cost?

Here are several home security systems available. Any comments will be appreciated.

Pros and cons, facts, any comments?

This is my field of employment.

PM me and I will give you some contacts. In the meantime, there are some things to consider. Motion detectors are fine, but if you have pets, get motion detectors that are "pet-immune". Or deal with false alarms. 8-) Window sensors are great, unless you leave a window open. Then you will be scrambling around looking for the zone that's open.

If you do use window sensors, no sense in locking the windows. If someone is trying to break in and finds locked windows, they will most likely break the glass. If yo insist on locking windows, then opt for "glass-break" detectors.

A couple of smoke/gas detectors, placed the the proper places, is a good investment.

Insist the system be programmed with an "ambush code" in case you are followed in by gunpoint or knifepoint.

A wireless system is good if you get yourself on a regimental battery changing schedule. Change batteries yearly on a day you won't forget; birthday, anniversary, holiday, etc. One thing about wireless systems; if you have any type of metal between the wireless sensor and the alarm panel, it nay hinder the wireless transmission. You can opt for a "hybrid" system; it can handle both wired and wireless transmitters.

Get a cell backup in case of phone line outages. I recommend Uplink. http://www.uplink.com/RESIDENTIAL/default.asp Your alarm system installer can install one easily.

With that said, the best insurance against theft and fire is...

Insurance! Even IF someone breaks in, there is still the possibility of theft or damage. Insurance will cover most loses and I understand they give discounts if you have an active security system.

We had a system at our old house, but we cancelled service because too many times, the alarm would go off and law enforcement would never show up. The one incident that really ticked me off was on Christmas Eve. DH was working and me and my girls were at my parents visiting. My girls were just babies at the time. ADT (the alsrm system company) called my at my parents and said they have been trying to reach us because one of the door alarms was going off. They said they had contacted law enforcement 15 minutes prior to calling my parents house. I drove home and when I got there, my heart dropped because my door was hanging wide open. I waited at the end of my driveway for over 30 MINUTES and nobody ever showed up. I finally convinved myself that nobody was in there and like an idiot, I locked my girls in the car and went in myself (I had called dh by this time and he was on his way home from work). Nothing was out of place and nobody was in there. I searched the entire house and ended up bringing the girls in. Almost an HOUR later, a cop shows up at the door. After I let him know how mad I was at how long it took someone to get there, he had the nerve to ask me if I wanted him to come in and search the house.

We finally figured out that I didn't shut the door all the way when I left and the dog laid against it and knocked it open.

I cancelled our security service the next day. It wasn't ADT's fault. It was the loss of faith in law enforcement one too many times. Plus, I kind of feel that if someone is going to rob my house, they'll be in and out before someone will get there to save us.

Nothing beats a German shepherd and a 12. Gauge

Hi Nikki!

This is why I stressed, as long as no one is home, insurance IS the best insurance. ;-)

John,

BANG! The dog is dead and the 12 gauge is only effective If you are home.

Plus, a gun is great as long as the intruder isn't standing over you, with a knife in your face.
Kind of hard to grab the gun, then.

At least with an alarm system, you have a few seconds to gather your wits, and point the muzzle correctly!

Biblereader, the way I see it is that you could go high-tech:

or low-tech:

Sounds like, based on what Nikki said, that a security system is only as good as the law enforcement that backs it up. I guess when i'm home alone i'll keep depending on my bad old chihuahua. :smt080

My husband has an arsenal of weapons (guns) but i've always been a little afraid of them. I can run pretty fast when I have to. :D

I heard a report that said that due to security systems in some places, because all they do is place a call to the police, that the police are spending a huge amount of time and tax dollars just answering false alarms. And this is keeping them from being where they are really needed.

Psalm 16:1 Preserve me, O God: for in thee do I put my trust.

Hebrews 2:15. And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.
