Yes, it is a sad story. I remember it kind of broke me when I saw the movie when I was 13. I was also baffled by how much Jennifer Lopez was made to look like her...it's almost as if they could be the same person. It's so bizarre.
I would think many people in this country have heard of her. Texas even has a Selena Day (on her birthday) in her honor.
Yes, Yolanda Saldívar had wanted to start a fan club for Selena and was appointed president in 1991. There were a lot of issues that started coming in about fans getting ripped off. It turns out Yolanda had stolen thousands upon thousands of dollars from Selena's fan club. Selena's family questioned this and so Yolanda purchased a gun, got Selena alone, and shot her in the back. The sad thing is, Selena knew she couldn't trust her at this point, but was still cornered alone. Of course, she died at the hospital despite the efforts of the first responders. The damage was too extensive and she completely bled out while doctors were fighting to keep her alive. Yolanda is still serving a life sentence in a maximum security prison in Texas. Supposedly she'll be eligible for parole in 2025...but even if that's true, I have a feeling that people aren't going to be happy with that. That's how I understand it.
I was a child at the time as well so I didn't understand who she was or what had happened. I don't even remember hearing about it. I remember after seeing the movie at school, my mom mentioned that she remembered and that it was a sad sad day.
I have to say that Dreaming of You and Como la Flor are my favorite songs by her.
She's someone that's been gravely missed for many years and probably will be for some years to come. It's a story that tears me up inside when I hear about it...I cannot imagine the loss her family felt. I cannot imagine how her husband feels each day knowing that happened.
