Should ministers preach with brute force?

Some years back, I had it out with someone on this topic. Yes sometimes you have to be blunt or preach with force, sometimes I need it, and sometimes I need to be told off from the pulpit.

Billy Sunday was rather loud, throughout his ministry he led many lost souls to Christ..

I think that second preacher needs to re-evaluate what the pulpit is for. I'm guessing it's not for telling people who have a political disagreement to get the h*ll out of church.

He knows. Watch some of the other videos, and his purpose will become clear. He's a bully for God. (My choice of terminology.)

what I mean by being told off from the pulpit is. Have you ever been sitting in the pews, and you say he or she is preaching to me, like somebody went to them and told on you. And as they preach you become convicted. I know this has happened to many of you.

I agree, Lewis, I appreciate when someone is willing to tackle the hard passages, and confront sin. I guess I need to be 'told off' too, and you are correct it is ultimately conviction from the Holy Spirit. The Lord bless you, brother.

Yep, there have also been times in which I wondered, "Why is this sermon being preached to me when it's this person, or that person who really needs to be hearing it, and they aren't even here! "

Also, as I stated, somewhat differently in a previous post in this thread, that Holy Spirit need not have any specific other person or place to convict with brutal force. Holy Spirit works His work many times in the most peculiar ways, need not be in a building or church, or from the mouth of some ranting preacher. If Holy Spirit uses brutal force to get the message accross to anyone, He will use any means that it takes to do so, be it what appears to be of a brutal force to the person or that of being one most gentle. We must never deny or reject the means Holy Spirit uses to get the message across to us. :yes

You know when I was addicted to drugs and alcohol, the brute force of the truth had to be told to me, and as for the Holy Ghost, brute force was used. I was allowed to take a massive beat down, by drugs and alcohol to make me come to my senses. And when I would back slide a even more massive beat down would happen, and that just kept going, even almost dying a few times. But as you can see God got through, He had and has the victory. And I don't like preachers that will preach to itching ears.

Lewis, Praise God! A great day of celebration in heaven for your recovery! I can somewhat relate to your situation. My daughter's dad, a life-long musician, had gone through many years of addiction problems. He too ended up hospitalized too many times. However, after his very very long struggle and victory over that battle, he is now an AA sponsor and plays his guitar for elders in nursing homes, and has played in church music ministry also. I prayed for him for 30 some years to come to the Lord. His mother's passed on before her prayers were answered but Praise God, they have been answered!

I know what you mean by preachers who preach to itching ears, those who "placate" what the people "want to hear" as opposed to what they need to hear. Yes.... many ministers are only preaching what tthe peole are willing to listen to, and they do it because there are self-ish motives behind that placating the people, OR they are so whimpy (yes, even the ones who rant with loud voices) because they are listenting to the authorities/their church leaders, rather than to what the Lord's voice is saying to them about what the people of their congregation need to hear.

But I truly believe the Lord gives us ministers who preach in various styles for good reason, NOT to placate us but to get His message across to us in whatever way need be for whomever, whenever necessary. He''l move someone to attend a church they never attended before just to hear a certain sermon, or He'll move a person to be scolded (as you have indicated) to bring them to their salvation. Hard-hearted people sometimes need a Brute force to shake them. The purging of sins never feels good when one has been living in them out of habit.

relic, I really love you, I thank God for you. But you hit it on the head when you said that, God gives people different preaching styles, for different reasons. That is so, so true.

Relic, I know just what you mean! I don't know how many times I heard a just wonderful sermon that would have been perfect for my ex!

Once in a while is fine but not ALL the time. My idea of "brute force" means screaming and pulpit pounding. The truth should ALWAYS be preached and taught and NEVER compromised or watered down. However, it can be done without leaving people with a a splitting headache as has happened to me. I've even had to wear earplugs with a a guest speaker, and I could still hear him with no problem. He came in LOUD and clear.

That style does not appeal to me. Be true to the word of God and focus on the love of God and also ties these into our current day. If a minister can do these things effectively I think he / she can capture the attention of more of the congregation than the pulpit pounding folks.
