One day I saw a coin on the ground.
Almost instinctively, as if mentally programmed from childhood, the thought came to me; “See a penny pick it up, all day long you’ll have good luck!†I remembered thinking, if not saying, those very words when I was young. I would pick up the coin and head straight to the mom and pop store and buy a penny candy!
Where I’d even get that phrase from, I honestly don’t know. It may have been from a movie or perhaps hearing folk talk while growing up. What I do know though, is this; thinking “See a penny pick it up, all day long you’ll have good luckâ€, has ceased working for me the older I got. After a while, it wasn’t worth the effort to stop, reach down, and pick up a copper coin that no longer held the same value it once had. However, one day I did stop. I reached down and picked it up.
As I stooped down to retrieve that one cent piece, I heard myself say as if without effort or thought, “In God we trust.†Huh? Where did that come from? It was a far cry from “See a penny, pick it up!†I heard my voice, “In God We Trust.â€
It’s logical one would (at least) think that. After all, those very words are inscribed on American money. Yes, even on a one cent penny! Realistically speaking, what’s picking up a penny really worth? People frequently leave them in a tray next to the cash register for the next customer to freely use. Yet, that day I got a glimpse of something different as I held that dusty coin between my fingers. I soon realized picking up a penny was no longer about it’s monetary value. It is about those words, “In God We Trust.â€
