Papers Show Isaac Newton's Religious Side, Predict Date of second coming of Christ-
Newton used the cryptic Book of Daniel to calculate the date for the apocalypse, reaching the conclusion that the world would end no earlier than 2060

JERUSALEM (AP) – Three-century-old manuscripts by Isaac Newton calculating the exact date of the apocalypse, detailing the precise dimensions of the ancient temple in Jerusalem and interpreting passages of the Bible – exhibited this week for the first time – lay bare the little-known religious intensity of a man many consider history's greatest scientist
Newton, who died 280 years ago, is known for laying much of the groundwork for modern physics, astronomy, math and optics. But in a new Jerusalem exhibit, he appears as a scholar of deep faith who also found time to write on Jewish law – even penning a few phrases in careful Hebrew letters – and combing the Old Testament's Book of Daniel for clues about the world's end.

The documents, purchased by a Jewish scholar at a Sotheby's auction in London in 1936, have been kept in safes at Israel's national library in Jerusalem since 1969. Available for decades only to a small number of scholars, they have never before been shown to the public.

In one manuscript from the early 1700s, Newton used the cryptic Book of Daniel to calculate the date for the apocalypse, reaching the conclusion that the world would end no earlier than 2060.

"It may end later, but I see no reason for its ending sooner," Newton wrote. However, he added, "This I mention not to assert when the time of the end shall be, but to put a stop to the rash conjectures of fanciful men who are frequently predicting the time of the end, and by doing so bring the sacred prophesies into discredit as often as their predictions fail."

In another document, Newton interpreted biblical prophecies to mean that the Jews would return to the Holy Land before the world ends. The end of days will see "the ruin of the wicked nations, the end of weeping and of all troubles, the return of the Jews captivity and their setting up a flourishing and everlasting Kingdom," he posited.

The exhibit also includes treatises on daily practice in the Jewish temple in Jerusalem. In one document, Newton discussed the exact dimensions of the temple – its plans mirrored the arrangement of the cosmos, he believed – and sketched it. Another paper contains words in Hebrew, including a sentence taken from the Jewish prayerbook.

Yemima Ben-Menahem, one of the exhibit's curators, said the papers show Newton's conviction that important knowledge was hiding in ancient texts.

"He believed there was wisdom in the world that got lost. He thought it was coded, and that by studying things like the dimensions of the temple, he could decode it," she said.

The Newton papers, Ben-Menahem said, also complicate the idea that science is diametrically opposed to religion. "These documents show a scientist guided by religious fervor, by a desire to see God's actions in the world," she said.

More prosaic documents on display show Newton keeping track of his income and expenses while a scholar at Cambridge and later, as master of the Royal Mint, negotiating with a group of miners from Devon and Cornwall about the price of the tin they supplied to Queen Anne.

The archives of Hebrew University in Jerusalem include a 1940 letter from Albert Einstein to Abraham Shalom Yahuda, the collector who purchased the papers a year earlier.

Newton's religious writings, Einstein wrote, provide "a variety of sketches and ongoing changes that give us a most interesting look into the mental laboratory of this unique thinker."

What's the point in guessing when it will happen? Jesus said only the father knew the time. I find it interesting that even though Jesus didn't know the time, people think they'll be able to work it out.

Well, whats the point in having any prophetic book then. I love Newton he was awesome, very interesting, way beyond his time. In fact he did more work with the Scriptures than he did in science, which seems incredible, but is true. I guess thats why the Jews, bought all his stuff up!

A prophetic book is God sending a message. God saying no one but he knows the timing is telling you you don't need to/shouldn't know.

Dopp, he wrote over 1,000,000 words of Bible commentary! That's amazing. No one can doubt his math skills. Considering the Jews are on a 6,000 year calendar, he may not be that far off. ;-)

dq, Jesus is very specific when He says;

Mat 25:13 Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.

Newton is careful in saying he believes it could happen later, but not earlier. He's not making a concrete prediction, but just a calculation based on scripture and historical points in time.

I believe Jesus is to return around the Jewish New Year (Rosh HaShanah) Couldn't tell you the year though. Even if I could, note that in the times of the first century, when our Scripture was being written, Rosh HaShanah was actually a two day "event". Therefore, if He were to return during the Jewish New Year, which one of those two days would it be?

for ye know neither the day nor the hour... 8-)

Thanx Vic, for your even-handedness in this post. The original poster was just makin a point. Then the others jumped to conclusions, riding Newton just for looking into the matter and coming up with a timeline. Newton didn't write a prophetic book, or set a date, or prophecy when it would happen, he just took the evidence and explained the possible. Because people overreacted, like in this post, they jump to conclusions, not examining the facts.

In the Christian point of view what will Jesus come to achieve?

Mat 24:34 Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled.

Mar 13:30 Verily I say unto you, that this generation shall not pass, till all these things be done.

Luk 21:32 Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass away, till all be fulfilled.

Israel became a nation again in 1948 after 2000 years. I believe the generation that witnessed this and the event of Jerusalem becoming it's Capital in 1967 will not pass away before we see the Lord return

Matthew 1:17 tells us that all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and all the generations from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and all the generations from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations. When we add fourteen plus fourteen plus fourteen, the total is forty-two generations from Abraham to Christ.
The great chronologist, Thiele, has said that from Abraham to Christ, we have a total of 2,160 years. If we divide forty-two generations into that, and the length of a generation becomes 51.4 years (ball park).
Mathew 24:32-25 tells us that the generation that sees the blooming of the fig tree will also witness the Return of our Lord. What is the fig tree? Joe 1:6, 7 explains that nations come against His nation of Israel. So the fig tree is in reference to Israel. Israel captured Jerusalem in 1967 many (myself included) believe this started the last generation. If you add 51.4 (ball park) to 1967 and it comes out to 2,018. This is why, though we can not set a specific date, we believe that the Lord's return could happen between now and 2,018.

In Edgar Whisenant's book 88 Reasons Why the Rapture Could Be in 1988, we find 88 Biblical reasons why the world will end in 1988. Obviously, this was wrong, just like it has been wrong from the time of Jesus. A careful reading of the Bible shows that Jesus and John the Baptist thought it would happen in about 30 years. Since the didn't happen, the Vhurch has tried to reinterpret these passages into something not easily proven false.

Actually, a careful reading is why many Historicists and Preterists believe the end of the world really meant, end of the age, the end of the nation of Israel, which they place at the Jewish revolt, the destruction of the Temple and the scattering of the Jews (the Diaspora).

This is what Newton and many of the Reformers believed. The futuristic interpretation of Prophecy came after them. Newton and many of the Reformers didn't believe in Rapture as it is taught today.

Interesting.

In islam we also believe in the return of Jesus. But there are a couple of major signs that will happen before. But what will the sole purpose of Jesus be in the Christian point of view. Do you believe in a anti Christ as well?

Isn't there something in Islam involving the return of the 'Hidden Imam'?

Explain what you mean by sole purpose? If I understand you.. The sole purpose to the Christian was to save mankind from sin and to reconcile mankind back to God through the love of the Father through the man Jesus Christ. His return is to redeem the Church before His Wrath is poured out on those that have not accepted Him as Lord.

Yes thats the Shia point of view, but not the majority who are sunni's.

Islam has minor and major signs but the first major sign is the appearance of Imam mahdi( or in the shia view the hidden imam).

Now the imam leader of the Umayyad Mosque ( St John's Shrine can be found inside the Mosque) gave a speech in 2004 and heres some things he talked about.

Points to note about Imam al-Mahdi (alaihi salaam)

He will be from the Ahle Bait (the family of the Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa aalihi wa sallam))
He will be born in Madinah
His name will be Muhammad ibn Abdullah (the same as that of Rasoolallah (sallallahu alaihi wa aalihi wa sallam))
He will not be a terrorist or an extremist fanatic who senselessly murders innocent bystanders, no. He will in fact be a Righteous Caliph who will have Political Authority and (most importantly) Divine Authority and both will be recognised; the Creation itself will help him in his task.
He will fill the earth with justice as it was filled with injustice before him
There will be people in Makkah looking for him in the Haram, and once they recognise him, he will be given bai’yah (pledge/allegiance) on the 10th day of Muharram between Maqam-e-Ibrahim and Hajr-e-Aswad (the Black Stone)
His bai’yah will be witnessed on the earth in many (if not all) places. Shaykh al-Yacoubi elaborated that with the advent of T.V. it makes sense that this incident would and could be broadcast to the four corners of the earth.
Once the first group of people (313 of them, the same number as that of the Sahaba at Badr) have given their bai’yah there will be a call from the Unseen clearly audible that this is the Khalifah of Allah and that we all give him our allegiance.
He will run between Makkah and At-Ta’if where he will be confronted by an army and will defeat it.
There will then be an army sent to destroy the Ka’ba but it will be swallowed up by the earth in an earthquake as a sign of the progressing and ultimate victory of Imam al-Mahdi. He will then move and invade further the northern territories (Syria, etc.).

i just done a quick search in google about the second coming of Jesus(isa). Heres what i found. By the way the word Isa means Jesus, and the word Dajjal means anti christ.

II. Hadhrat Isa's (A.S.) Descension The Physical Features of Hadhrat Isa (A.S.)

He will resemble the famous Sahabi (A.S.) Hadhrat Urwa bin Masoodi (R.A.). He will be of average height and red and white in colour. His hair spread to the shoulders, straight, neat and shining as after a bath. On bending his head, it will seem as if pearls are falling. He will have an armour on his body. He will be wearing two pieces of cloth light yellow in color.

His Descension

He will descend on a Jamaat (group) that will be righteous at the time and comprising of 800 men and 400 women. The people will be preparing for war at the time against Dajjal (the anti-Christ). It will be time for Fajr prayers, and Imam Mahdi will be the Amir (leader). From the darkness of the dawn, a sound will suddenly be heard that "one who listens to your pleas has come" -- the righteous people will look everywhere and their eyes will fall on Isa (A.S.). Briefly, at the time of Fajr, Isa (A.S.) will descend. When descending, Isa (A.S.)'s hands will be on the shoulders of two angels (according to another source (Kab Abrar), a cloud will carry him). On their insistence Hadhrat Isa will introduce himself. He will inquire about their enthusiasm and thoughts on Jihad against Dajjal. Hadhrat Isa (A.S.) will descend on the eastern side near the Minaret in Damascus (or in Baitul-Muqaddus by Imam Mahdi). At the time Imam Mahdi will have proceeded forward to lead the Fajr Salaat. The Iqamat of the Salaat would have been said (already recited) and Imam Mahdi will call Hadhrat Isa (A.S.) for Imamat (to lead the prayer), but he (Hadhrat Isa (A.S.)) will instead tell Imam Mahdi to lead the prayer since the Iqamat of that Salaat has already been said for him. Thus Imam Mahdi will lead the prayer, and Hadhrat Isa (A.S.) will follow him. After the ruku, he will make this statement: "Allah has killed Dajjal and the Muslims have appeared."

His Marriage, Death and Deputies

After his descension on earth, Hadhrat Isa (A.S.) will marry. He will have children, and he will remain on earth 19 years after marriage. He will pass away and Muslims will perform his Janaza Salaat and bury him net to Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam). (Tirmidhi)
