So lets talk about tattoos

So i was just online and I came across this bible verse, leviticus 19:28

lev 19:28 "You shall not make any cuts on your body for the dead or tattoo yourselves: I am the Lord."

What do you guys think of that? I have truely never given much thought towards getting a tattoo, but I had also never thought of it as possibly being a sin, and I was just wondering how you guys interpret this...

I mean, I take it more as saying that we shouldn't just damage our bodies on purpose for the scar that it will leave or anything like that (esp. by cutting ourselves, etc...), but do you think it means that even something like a small tattoo of like a cross for example, is going against God?

Good question. I have an earring and sometimes it makes me think too. What about surgical incisions for they are intentional cuts on our bodies and what if we did a surgical incision ourself? Maybe there is a difference between the two, but quite honestly I am not sure.

In context the command in the Old Testament is due to cultural influences. The pagans would mutilate themselves with blades (as did the prophets of Baal up on the mountain when Elijah challenged them to a dual of whose god was the real God). God didn't want any signs of this on their body because it was the mark of the pagans, and it was sinful to have any appearance as them.

That being said, though this cultural context has dissipated today, we are to take care of our body and not bloch it with things that are little more than body graffiti. Not to mention getting tatoos is vain, meaningless in the grand scheme of things. I don't care if you tatoo God's name in hebrew on your body, though you may not have sinned it most certainly is vain and really of no use.

Now I do believe that you can sin when you a tatoo, due to one's intentions for getting it or by the content of the tatoo. If you get the tatoo for promiscuous reasons, or even put it on an innapropriate part of the body to draw attention, then it is sin. Also if the content is profane, lewd, suggestive, rebellious, etc. it is a sin. And if we look at the cultural context of today people who wear gothic makeup, men who have long hair, and people who have tatoos often do so to make their appearance symbolize rebellion (whether it be against social systems or God himself). And usually (unfortunately) such people have had a rough childhood that caused some of their attitude to develop. Even if just used for an anti-social flow, such rebellions and deviations can never breed any good, especially when God wants us to reach out to all people and show them God's love. By distancing ourselves with such extreme appearances we infact can inhibit God's plan for our lives.

And last but not least, tatoos can be a stumbling block and/or distraction to others and may cause them to sin because of a weak conscience or it may inhibit your ministry. Read Romans chapter 14 to discover the importance of being concerned about others when you choose to do something. Surprisingly this is also why suicide is selfish, you don't think about the impact it will have on other people.

But ask yourself this if you are thinking of getting a tatoo:

- Is it worth it to have this on my skin permanantly? Tatoos are vain.
- For what reason am I doing it? What are your motives?
- What will this tell others about me?
- Is this a symbol of rebellion that I have secretly harbored in my heart?

Weigh your actions and intentions and what effect it will have on you, the people around you, and your relationship with God. Ask yourself if it is really worth it. God does not hate you if you already have a tatoo but really it is to no avail, being vain, and unfortunately (since we can't change the past) it can send the wrong message to people and cause them to stumble.

yeah i would agree with cybershark on this, i mean, that does make a lot of sense. And because I believe that God looks at the heart, and not on our outward appearance, I suppose that it really could just depend on the intentions of why you got it.

and again, this isn't anything i'm considering doing, I just came across the verse and was interested in trying to learn more of what it meant :D

I know some will have a hard time receiving this teaching because tattooing has now become an accepted practice in our society. However, just because society approves of something does not make it right in God's eyes. Our society at large, also approves of abortion and divorce as well. However, the Bible makes it clear that God doesn't approve of these things.

In sharing this teaching, I am not trying to condemn anyone who already has a tattoo; but rather to warn those who are considering getting one. God loves us, and even when we make mistakes in poor judgment, He doesn't condemn us, but rather tries to help overcome the consequences of those mistakes. Having a tattoo will not keep anyone from serving the Lord. We know some very godly people who have tattoos and are serving the Lord and their tattoos do not interfere with what God is doing through them. Anything Satan tries to use for evil, God can turn and use it for good when we commit totally to Him. God takes us as we are and uses us if we will yield to His will. God will use any of us when we come out of the world and start serving Him with our whole hearts to do His will. Our past is under the blood of Jesus and the sins and mistakes of the past will not hinder our God in our serving Him. Only a hard and unrepentant heart keeps us tied to the old life.

There are many dedicated and sincere Christian people that have tattoos. This article is not meant to say they do not love the Lord. God not only can use them, but does use them. The issue is not whether God can use someone, but rather should Christians pursue getting tattoos? Just because something is popular does not mean it is right. We should always examine things by the "roots and the fruits" of the thing in question.

TATTOOING HAS WITCHCRAFT "ROOTS"

In addition to the above verse, Scripture also warns us not to disfigure our bodies in following verses:

1 Kings 18:28: "And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lancets, till the blood gushed out upon them."

Deuteronomy 14:1(Amplified): "Ye are the sons of the LORD your God; you shall not cut yourselves, nor make any baldness on your foreheads for the dead."

When it speaks here about doing this in relation to the dead; this was a witchcraft rite done to mourn or remember their dead. Therefore tattooing, cutting one's body and shaving one's head in defiance have their origin in witchcraft practices. Tattoos have their "roots" in witchcraft. Many young people today are doing these very things because of some evil witchcraft influences in their lives that they are unaware of. They do not realize that partaking of these can open the door to wrong and defiling influences in their lives. Evil videos, depraved rock music albums, wicked Internet games and violent movies are displaying evil trends in order to destroy our youth. Satanic tattoos, skin heads and other cultic rites are opening many of our children to demonization.

This is what makes it spiritually dangerous for people. People do not realize displaying a satanic mark or symbol can open the door for Satanic attack which allows the enemy entrance in their lives. It is not the mark itself, but rather the sin behind it. Today this practice is growing because of the spread of False Religions. Some people are so hideously covered with tattoos that their appearances look evil. Others, only have small tattoos that they believe are trendy or artistic.

Now this article is not meant to hurt or offend those that have tattoos, but rather to help people avoid getting tattoos that later on they might regret (especially young people). Many tattoos have evil and witchcraft themes that are portrayed as devil faces, skulls, ugly demonic signs, vulgar pictures, etc. These things hurt the human spirit, just as satanic displays of any kind do. Some tattoos are obviously Satanic as they look devilish, while others may be flowers or innocent looking names or objects but it is the spirit behind this compromise that makes it dangerous for a Christian. God loves the person who has tattoos just as He loves all of us. However, He would rather we did not deface our bodies in any fashion.

Some people object to using Old Testament scripture as a reference to tattoos since the New Testament doesn't speak of these things. However, in the New Testament we are even called to a higher law. We are to have God's laws written in our hearts. When we remain close to the Lord and obey Him, He can direct us in things that are not good for us. For example although the Bible does not say, "Thou shalt not smoke" or "Drug addiction is bad for you;" we know that these things are destructive to the human body. In the New Testament, we are told to glorify God in our bodies. This would include not marring our bodies with tattoos, as the principles in the Bible clearly tell us it is wrong to defile our bodies.

OUR BODIES ARE A TEMPLE

When the Lord created man and woman and placed them in the garden along with His other creations. He spoke these words in Genesis 1:31, "And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day." When the Lord created the human body, He pronounced that the way He created it was very good. The Lord desires that our bodies be a reflection of His own beauty. When people tattoo their bodies they are tampering with what the Lord said was very good the way He made it. We should never mark our bodies as this is unnatural. Our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit and we are admonished not to defile them. Tattoos on one's body is like graffiti on a wall. Having tattoos on our bodies does not glorify God.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20: "What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's."

What is it within man that makes us dissatisfied with the way the Lord made each of us? Most people are not happy with the way they look so they seek ways that will cause them to feel better about themselves or cause others to accept them. This is not wrong when it comes to having good grooming habits, but we need to understand true beauty comes from within, not from what we wear or how we look. When the emphasis is put on the outward appearance we can be ensnared in vanity, rejection, fear, pride and even racial discrimination. One of the most wonderful things about receiving the Lord is that He wants to deliver us from the outward things that we think we need to feel good about ourselves. When we are in sin we do not feel worthy or acceptable, but through Christ we are. When we can fully walk in the knowledge that we are acceptable before God through Christ, we are then free to be the person God made us to be without having to create a different image. Many people are consumed with trying to be different or become acceptable not only by getting a tattoo but by other things as well.

Some Christians argue that they have the name Jesus or some Biblical word or sign tattooed on their body so they can witness by the tattoo. However, God is more concerned how we are living our lives than by displaying a religious mark on our body. That is not the highest way He would have us witness. The Lord would rather us witness to others by the character of Christ being demonstrated in our lives than display Christian slogans that many times are not matched by the life of Christ. Certainly, the Lord can use a tattoo of a cross or other religious symbol when a Christian has one of these as God knows the heart of the one who truly wants to share Christ with others. However, it is not necessary to use any worldly thing to attract sinners. It is the Holy Spirit who draws people to Christ through any yielded vessel of the Lord. When we pray and witness to others the Lord will cause them to listen.

Just because a person has had a tattoo, it will not prevent God from using people to witness nor keep them from being a minister of God. God looks on the heart and can use different things to testify of Christ's love, even tattoos. However, well- meaning people can be deceived in their methods of evangelism.

THE YOUTH CULTURE AND TATTOOS

I really believe that one of the compromises we see today is parents allowing their children to mark or tattoo their bodies. Christians can look at someone who has tattoos all over them and know by discernment that it is not God, but the same Christians may get a small tattoo themselves or allow their children to have one without thinking anything about it. Toy makers today even sell washable ink transfer kits so children can mark their bodies with designs. This may seem like a harmless game but this is the enemy preparing or setting up our children early to receive real tattoos later on.

Many young people today do not realize that they may be sorry in the future that they chose to put tattoos on their bodies today. We know of many people who have said to us that they wish they had not been foolish when they were young as now they must live with the reminder of what they did when they were young. Only a few people have the money to have them removed by laser.

Years ago our young boys in the military had to go to foreign lands to get a tattoo, now tattoo parlors are everywhere because our nation here in the U.S.A. has opened its doors to many heathen practices and false religions. Another danger in receiving tattoos is a medical one through faulty procedures. One of the latest discoveries of another way AIDS is being transmitted is through contaminated ink or dirty tattoo needles. If fresh ink is not used, then the last person who was tattooed who had any kind of transmittable disease could leave behind that virus or bacteria. Not only Aids, but Hepatitis as well, has been traced to tattoo ink and needle contamination.

Some young people are having them done in defiance and rebellion to their parent's wishes because they want to be like their friends. This is displeasing to God as the Lord tells children to honor and obey their parents.

Colossians 3:20: "Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord."

The reason so many people are deceived on this issue, as well as others, is that there is a lack of knowledge in the things of God and a lack of discernment in the body of Christ. Hosea 4:6a says, "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge." Many have not been taught nor grounded in the Word of God. We as church leadership owe an apology to the youth of our day because many of us have failed in our responsibility to speak out on the issues of the day and have allowed the influences of the world to shape our society. Many Christian parents have failed in their responsibility also, as they have been too involved in chasing the American Dream instead of raising our children in the nurture and admonition of God as commanded in the Bible. Ephesians 6:4: "And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord."

I was going to start to put togther my thoughts on this, but you pretty much covered it. Just look at the context in which this verse is found.

eating of flesh from which the blood had not been drained (v. 26); practicing witchcraft (v. 26); trimming the hair in accordance with idolatrous practices (v. 27); making cuttings in one’s flesh as an expression of mourning for the dead (v. 28); making marks on the body as the heathen did (v. 28); making one’s daughter become a prostitute, as was common in pagan worship (v. 29); breaking of the Sabbath (v. 30); consulting mediums or familiar spirits (v. 31). Honor was to be shown to the aged (v. 32), and strangers were to be treated with kindness and hospitality (vv. 33, 34). Honest business practices were enjoined (vv. 35–37).

What you said was no Joke. I could share some real life expieriances but it may be uncomfortable with some to hear.

I was also thinking that this thread / question would be good in the general forum as I think many can relate to this and offer insite.

Atonement, what you said was very detailed and correct, and basically you just expanded what I said in a few sentances at the beginning of my post. Note though that I said that the cultural context in which these markings were done has disipated. Markings such as that no longer associate one with pagans, because pagans don't do that any more. I mentioned that the Prophets of Baal did it in Elijah's time (they thought Baal liked the scent of blood), but today at most people would just think you are suicidal or something if you slash yourself with a blade (like trying to slit your wrists).

But even todays tatoos are not that physically extreme and are rather ink bloches on the skin rather than lacerations & scars in the flesh. But if you read my post above you should see my view on tatoos, being vain and all. What do you think of my treatment of it?

I personally, though, don't associate tatoos with witchcraft today. I think the context today is with how your appearances reflect the condition of your heart.

Thanks guys..

I really like both cybershark and atonements comments on this, thanks so much!
I see both sides of what you two are saying, and really what I have come to think at this point, is that if God isn't calling you to get a tattoo, then there's really not much of a reason to get one.

But even todays tatoos are not that physically extreme and are rather ink bloches on the skin rather than lacerations & scars in the flesh.
yes I agree, but at the same time, as like atonement said
God made us to be without having to create a different image. Many people are consumed with trying to be different or become acceptable not only by getting a tattoo but by other things as well.

So in the long run, like I said before, I really can't think of any spiritual reason to get one, and sin or not, its not worth the chance of getting one if it is displeasing to God

Here we go lol,

Well if I ever become a christian again, I'm not sure how I'm going to talk around this one as I've got a tattoo on my back lol.
It's a chinese symbol for wellbeing, I also have a piercing as well but I'm not saying where as I've had it for a couple of years now. Do christians still have to get them prayed over or what as in some of the churches I know off, they make sure that it's covered within prayer.

This is one of the beautiful things about my God ''Jesus''
When you are his and or become his, he will take you as you are, no strings attached. I know many people who came to know the Lord after the tatoo work and some had them removed while others kept them. It will come down to your own personal conviction. The Holy Spirit speaks to people in different ways.

I have a brother in another state that has tattoos from his finger tips to the shoulder on both arms, a tattooed chain of some sort around his neck with two skulls on both sides of his neck three tear drops from the corner of one eye, a bat and a woman on his stomach (need I say more on that?), and some on his back and legs that I couldn't describe here. He also has a ring in his nose, tongue, and both ears. You can barely see any resemblance of skin on his arms...front or back. A spider web decorates both elbows and extends up and below the elbow. On and on and these images are not exactly holy. What or who would possess someone to do this is a mystery and since he is a younger brother by seven years, I've given him a hard time about it for years and he calls it art. I call it stupidity. Most of these tattoos are of a demonic nature...screaming, bloody skulls and the like-completely stupid. And, of course he use to ride a motorcycle(may still do it) if you get the picture. Needless to say, we have absolutely nothing in common except blood.

Very true.
A tattoo denotes ownership. It is like putting the name of the owner on a container to show who owns what is inside. "Mom", "Rosie" a military emblem, or things more demonic seem to say to tell the world who owns or controls your heart. In other words, it is a symbol of bondage.

"Christian tattoo" seems to be a contradiction in terms. To disobey the Master in order to show loyalty...it isn't right.

The thing is, we can't know the heart of a person who walks into a tatoo place to get a tatoo of a cross, or even a butterfly.
If your conscience condemns you then you shouldn't do it; if it's something ungodly you shouldn't do it.
Personally, I hate to see a woman with a tatoo. I won't say why because I don't want to insult anyone.
But, what is God looking at?...

I Sam 16:4-7
But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the LORD does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.â€Â

This subject can be iffy. But I have known a few Christians who didn't exactly "get" tattoos but they got ones to cover up their old ones. Like some who had some vulgar imagines of a woman and such and got it fixed to look like something with Jesus or something of the sort, because they wanted to at least fix their appearance somewhat. God may look at the heart, but people usually don't. Also that verse was to the Israelites, which things like "You can eat this but not this" comes from. To it varies from Denomination to denomination. "God knows the heart of men" I feel that if you really feel in your heart that you can get one and you get one, so be it. But if you think that getting one is bad and you shouldn't do it, and you do it, then that is sin. Same with the eating thing, I had the eating conversation so many times with my girlfriend, if you feel you shouldn't be doing something, chances are, you shouldn't.

The Scripture reference to tattoos are directed to Israel, and 'technically' do not apply to us today.
Unfortunately, it has become the 'in' thang for a lot of people, and it is most distressing to me to see women and girls doing this in droves. last Sunday I was in a checkout line at the supermarket, and a young kid, about 10, had a tattoo on his upper left arm. i looked at the parents, and they both had them. Oy! I see it around here(the office) constantly, and I remember well when I counselled in the juvenile detention joint that several young males were completely attooed from the neck down. In my own case, my parents were very much down on it, and Moms said that anyone who got a tattoo was 'common.' I know I would have gone out the door head over heels had I shown up with a tattoo. I am still very much against them, but I do not condemn anyone who has them.

The origins are in paganism and witchcraft, and people really need to consider that before they get them, because they kinda mark one with an occultish ---I'm blocking here on the word I want---flavour(is that good?).

If you see young guys---especially Black guys---with a teardrop tattoo, it may signify gang membership.

It is also common in slavery, was used in Nazi Germany in concentration camps, and is used today in the human traffic trade.

I accept that you have a good argument but this happened quite a few years ago, I don't say this lightly as my family lost relatives during the war as well.
Thing is tattoo's have been around for centuries, even in egyptian times which many of the people had then to show who owed them and also as a fashion statement.
In modern times, it's my belief that people have a choice on what they have done. I had been thinking of having the ultimate one with having something on the lines of the craft but I've now decided not too just in case I turn back to religion, it would be hard for someone to try and get rid of a tattoo with the name witch on, wouldn't it lol. I had the tattoo as a statement to what I believe and do within my whole being. I'm not sure someone with my kind of past can actually turn away from everything as I'm a healer and people come to me expecting something to happen and it does. I'll really have to think things through before I do anything.
